This movie is rated PG. The movie didn’t have any bad language or any violence other than a kick to the head in one of the scenes and that was more of jerk reaction than premeditated violence. I am not sure why it was given a PG rating.
Now to a little background on me that would make my review a little skewed. The movie is about an infertile couple. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for six years, so we are aware of the heartache that accompanies that journey to parenthood. So going into the movie I knew I was going to love the movie.
The movie starts off with the couple, Cindy and Jim, sitting in an adoption interview and then begin telling this amazing story. I don’t want to give all this story away because it is touching. My favorite two parts are the parts that made me cry.
The first part which made me cry was at the beginning and I will share with you that scene as most of it was in previews. After Jim and Cindy find out they are infertile they write down on pieces of paper all the qualities that their son would have. While going through infertility, that is something you think of often. I often wonder to myself if my baby would have my husband’s technological mind, our love for music, my picky taste or husband’s wide pallet, or my artistic spirit. It is fun to wonder, but at this point Jim and Cindy have been in told in no uncertain terms they can not conceive. So they take their would be son’s qualities and put them in a box and bury it. I think they do that so they can grieve the loss of having a biological child. It is easier to give up and move on if you have a tangible grieving process. Jim and Cindy were having fun thinking up the qualities and then when they were done, they buried the box in the garden.
The second part that made me cry was at the end. I don’t want to spoil the ending so I am not going to share what happened. My husband called it quaint, because of course, my tough hubby doesn’t cry at most movies.
I think the message of the movie to parents is that you don’t have to be perfect to parent. For kids, the message seemed to me that you are to be yourself. Timothy Green taught the whole community how to love and to take responsibility.
I definitely recommend this movie for everyone, children included. I don’t know why it wasn’t better reviewed. The characters were fully developed. Though you could figure out the storyline pretty early, there is a surprise at the end that I think makes this movie excellent.
