- Prelinger Archives was founded by Rick Prelinger in 1983 as a private collection based in New York City's Meatpacking District and first incorporated in 1985. From its beginning, the Archives collected what it originally called "ephemeral films" — film produced for specific purposes at specific times and not intended for permanent use, including advertising and sponsored films, educational films and industrial films. Today the Archives prefers the term "useful cinema," a term coined by Charles Acland and Haidee Wasson to describe films produced "in order to instruct, to sell, and to make or remake citizens." The Archives also collected home movies and amateur films, which has become a major component of its activities since 2008. In 1999 Prelinger Archives moved to San Francisco and soon partnered with Internet Archive to make films available online for free downloading, viewing and reuse. The collection has continued to grow. In 2002 the Prelinger Collection, consisting of some 60,000 productions plus much unedited footage, was acquired by Library of Congress. Prelinger Archives, now co-managed by Rick and Megan Prelinger, has continued to acquire film and now holds some 30,000 home movies, several thousand sponsored and educational films, and a large collection of outtakes and unused footage. In collaboration with Filecoin Foundation for the Decentralized Web and Internet Archive, Prelinger is currently scanning film on a large scale and making it available online. Further information about Prelinger Archives is at www.prelinger.com and www.prelingerarchives.online.
