Todd and Rhonda Thornton, a Monticello couple, have embarked on an ambitious project to renovate a historic property at 315 W. Washington St., commonly known as the red house. The Thorntons purchased the home in 2022 and have been extensively restoring and renovating it for short-term rentals and other uses.

The short-term rentals are now available, with five bookings already scheduled, including the first one starting on May 12. The rental includes three bedrooms, 1.5 baths, a full kitchen, a combined dining and living room, and a second living space that can be used as a bedroom area.

In addition to the short-term rentals, the Thorntons have plans to further develop the property. They intend to build out a retail space on the back half of the first level, convert the basement into a cocktail lounge with gaming, and add a back porch facing the south parking lot.

The renovations are being partially funded by a grant from the city of Monticello. Todd Thornton praised the city and Monticello Main Street for their support, saying, "Their doors are all open and ready to help." inside
