It’s been a productive four years for Infinite River.

The ad hoc Detroit “supergroup” — Gretchen Gonzales (Slumber Party, Terror at the Opera), Warren Defever (His Name is Alive) and Joey Mazzola (Sponge, Detroit Cobras), with Sparks’ regular drummer Steve Nistor — formed during the early days of the pandemic in 2020.

It’s released three records, including last month’s “Tabula Rasa,” and according to Gonzales, the group has banked “hours and hours” of additional recorded songs and improvisations.

“When we were playing over the pandemic, we realized we had a nice little dialogue with each other,” Gonzales says. “I definitely knew we would have a lot of records, but I figured there would be more of the improvised material. Then all of a sudden Joey got inspired, and every time I see him he’s like, ‘OK, I’ve got three more songs … .'”

“Tabula Rosa” is Infinite River’s first song-oriented album, a set of 11 diverse instrumentals — from aggressive prog to twangy melodic, plus a cover of “My Favorite Things” from “The Sound of Music.” Gonzales, who’s married to fellow musician and philanthropist Ethan Daniel Davidson, says there will be room to stretch the songs during performances, however, which allows her and her bandmates to cover a gamut of their own interests.

“I like the improvisations most, Joey is very much a song person and Warren’s sort of in the middle, so striking that sort of balance is definitely the goal,” Gonzales explains. “We all just love making music together, so I know once we do these next couple of shows we will definitely work on our next record and just keep it going.”

Infinite River celebrates the release of its new album, “Tabula Rosa,” on Saturday, May 11, at Third Man Records, 441 Canfield St., Detroit. Doors at 7:30 p.m. Liz Copeland and Clark Warner will DJ. 313-209-5205 or thirdmanrecords.com.
