Where to meet indie/hippie folks in their 20s in DC?

I moved to DC this past August and I’m honestly so disappointed with how conformist DC seems to be. All everyone cares about is their jobs. How and where can I meet chill granola people (if at all)?

Are you looking for indie, hippie, or granola? The indie folks are in New York, the hippies are in Seattle, the granolas are in Boulder. The conformists are in DC. But you might like Dupont Circle & Adams Morgan. Consider visiting Malcolm X Park (i.e. Meridian Hill Park) or Kalorama Park

That's where you'll find the real community vibe beyond the job-focused crowd.

Why did you move here?

For grad school

There are some in Mt Pleasant and Takoma/Takoma Park but DC is very much a firm pro-status quo neoliberal town where employment is front and center of everyone's lives. Those who try to shake up the status quo either quickly conform or leave for other pastures. That's never going to change.

I feel you 100%. I'm pretty granola-y/gorp-y. Really far left politically. It'll be a lot of work but you have to make your own community. I moved here for grad school and made friends with a whole bunch of non-profit type folks. I started rock climbing at Earth Treks (now Movement) where I met other like minded people. I was active for a bit in the local DSA chapter where I met other granola type people. I did Amnesty International for a bit but everyone in the chapter were older retirees so I left.

We all kind of keep to ourselves, but for me part of that is security purposes. I work in a very DC-centric industry and am legitimately scared of my political beliefs (for example) somehow getting back to my employer. I stay far away from work happy hours and other similar type social functions for that reason.

Well, GWU is having a protest with your kind of people, but there’s police presence and you may get face tagged to some watch lists.

What was the point of this comment? It literally sums up everything OP was referencing in their post.

Yep. College kids throwing away their degrees is totally “conformist.”

Why did you have to bring something up that had literally nothing to do with the original post. If you wanted to talk about the protests, you should’ve gone elsewhere

“Granola” and “non conformist”

What is more granola than living in a tent in the streets of DC?

What is more non conformist than rejecting one’s privilege and putting one’s future on the line?

Seriously, get over it. If you want the stinky hippy life, minus politics, I’d suggest the PNW.

That’s actually not what I was asking for but thanks for making assumptions about someone you don’t know!

"Your kind of people"

Stated by a person who threw parties outside the Justices’ homes (ie: me)….
