Summary

  • Chris Hemsworth blames himself for losing touch with Thor's character in Love and Thunder.
  • Hemsworth admits becoming a parody due to overdoing improv during filming.
  • Thor 5 can improve by finding a clear tone, potentially exploring darker storylines involving Hercules or an adaptation of Marvel Comics' Siege.

Chris Hemsworth has revealed why he blames himself for Thor: Love and Thunder. Hemsworth was on a great Marvel Cinematic Universe streak that included Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame before Thor: Love and Thunder failed to meet expectations. Despite Thor: Love and Thunder including exciting characters and having an interesting story, the movie failed in its execution, which ended up resulting in a mismatch of two very different tones.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Hemsworth said that he became a parody of himself in the MCU's Thor: Love and Thunder. When director Taika Waititi boarded Thor: Ragnarok, he added his signature comedic flair to the character. That was continued in Thor: Love and Thunder; however, the humor went too far, taking away from Gorr the God Butcher's dark story and Jane Foster's tragic fate. Hemsworth is aware of the movie's problems, which could lead to a return to form in Marvel Studios' Thor 5, which Vanity Fair claims Hemsworth thinks he owns the audience. “I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself. I didn’t stick the landing.”

How The MCU Can Turn Thor Around After Love And Thunder

Thor 5 Would Need To Strike A Balance

Thor: Love and Thunder might have failed to be the success Marvel and fans hoped it would be; however, there is plenty still to do with Thor in the MCU. Hemsworth being open to returning for Thor 5 is perfect, as it would allow the actor to get a big send-off film that makes up for Thor: Love and Thunder. The most important aspect of the possible MCU film is that it would need to find a clear tone. Waititi's second Thor movie ended up seeing two opposite tones clash, and that impacted the movie negatively.

Hemsworth has shown that he can nail Thor's character in both comedic and dramatic scenarios, though based on the reception to Thor: Love and Thunder, it might be for the best that Thor 5 is a more serious entry. There are two possible stories for Thor 5 that follow that tone. The first one was teased by a Thor: Love and Thunder post-credits scene. Ted Lasso's Brett Goldstein plays Hercules in the MCU, and Thor 5 will likely see Hercules and Thor fight as Goldstein's character tries to get revenge for his father, Zeus, having been mocked by Thor.

Another possible dark story for the movie was teased at the end of the Disney+ series Secret Invasion. After the Skrulls attempted to take over Earth, the President of the United States ruled all aliens on the planet a threat. Skrulls were shown being hunted down by militias, and that could extend to the residents of New Asgard. Thor 5 could then be an adaptation of the "Siege" story from Marvel Comics, with Hemsworth's Thor and other MCU heroes trying to defend New Asgard from several threats, differing in tone from Thor: Love and Thunder.
