Nothing much happens, but the whole situation - 2 young opera singers in Italy in 1880s - is fascinating, especially if you know something about some of the most well-known operas. At the end of the book, the richness of the characters and the context leaves you wanting to think about it more.

This is a beautifully written story of two young women who are taken from Ireland and turned in prima opera singers in Italy circa 1880-90 their experiences are warmly described and they never lose their draw to home! Kate O'Brien writes about friendship and relationships with sympathy and warnth. I loved this book as well as Land of Spices. The operatic detail makes you want to hear and see the operas she talks about. a most unusual story so well told.

While living in Italy for I time, I came across this novel. Often bookstores will stock foreign language titles that are either best sellers or take place within that country. This novel follows the story of two young Irish girls sent to France and then to Italy to hone their musical talents. Through hard work and hard times, they each make a name for themselves in the dazzling opera world in the time of Verdi. Their stories intertwine with other musician and singers shedding light on the sacrifices that people must make for such art.

O'Brien's style is quite natural; her world never seems trite or implausible. Any one who is a fan of opera will appreciate this glimpse into that strange world.

An interesting study of how the girls grow and develop in a new environment and how their Irish , catholic roots and they strive for artistic and romantic fulfilment.
