Junior: I have been at GALA since 6th Grade (now 11th), I am always challenged academically and feel I have a very strong support system from my teachers, counselors, and friends. I have enjoyed all the STEM focused classes, along with a variety of AP or on level classes that's offered. While students come from all over LAUSD (yay to having bus transportation!), it makes going to school a lot easier for a lot of families and there is definitely a close knit community vibe here at GALA!... Senior: My school is extremely small and technology-based. While they offer all subjects and a myriad of student-led clubs, the main focus of the school is STEM, hence the technological focus. The Robotics team is considered the equivalent of the varsity football team, which segues into the fact that my school also lacks sports teams, other than the highly-ranked running team. This proposes some issues, as it's difficult to experience traditional high school events such as football games, large school dances, and more. However, the tight-knit community I've found while attending this school has allowed for close friendships and lasting memories, even if they differ from those of large, populated high schools. Senior: The teachers are incredible, I've never had a bad experience with any teachers I've had, they all care about their jobs and the students. The faculty adores the students and looks out for them. It is a very diverse school and very academically rigorous however, this is not a school-spirited or sporty school, the students care very much about their academics and those two fall a bit short. There is a wide selection of sports and school spirit to some extent, but those definitely aren't the driving reasons why someone would want to attend Downtown Magnets High School. We have very dedicated counselors who want the best for their students and I believe that the college counselors work very hard to ensure that students are well-informed on their options after high school. Senior: As a person who went to Beverly for four years and really loved his experience over there, I feel like I was prepared for college and was guided well by my teachers. Although the school has certain areas to improve upon, I can confidently say that the staff did all they could to provide a positive learning environment. My teachers always did their best for me and challenged me to learn more. All in all, I took 7 AP classes here and was really impressed by the dedication the school had towards academics, visual arts, and theatre. I also played water polo but our athletics department, especially football, was never excellent. From my perspective, this is truly an exceptional school for students looking to excel in communications, TV, theatre, arts, etc. but may lack progress in other aspects of education. I cannot say that I particularly hated any specific part of my education here but I think looking back, they could have provided more resources for humanities and language learning.... Senior: I had an amazing time at Port of Los Angeles High School overall. Even though I had only recently joined during my junior year, I enjoyed participating in activities. I liked how they had so many options available to them. They offer a ton of excellent courses, like construction and welding. My only complaint is that the welding course requires two years to complete. I attempted to enroll in it during my senior year but was unable to do so because I already needed to complete the two years of coursework. Junior: Since my freshman year with USC Hybrid High, I have had such a wonderful experience each year in this stellar community. I would have never recieved the precious experiences if it weren't for my serene relationships that I have created with the staff. From advisors, to our generous principal, they have given resourceful opportunities to each student in the building. As for our school culture, we have gained so much from the participation in clubs, external programs, sports, internships, rigorous classes, and more. Our school and Ednovate network's mantra is Positive Multigenerational Change, which I find that our school has successfully continued since it's opening. A highlight amongst many would be our seniors' achievements every year. Many teachers try to make their students feel better when they are feeling down, try to talk to them and put their sleeves in their shoes, and give them snacks when they are hungry in order to have a little energy in class. Freshman: My freshman year has been alright. All of the teachers I have are very nice. However, a few teachers don't always explain the subject or organize themselves well. Our school has many clubs and after-school activities which is great! I've never attended the after-school programs but the clubs I joined are fun! They boost my community service hours and I like participating in their events during lunch. Senior: I'm a current senior at Math & Science College Preparatory, and I'd say I've had a great academic experience here at this school. They have offered me with amazing opportunities such as an internship at CO Architects, STEM competitions, PLTW courses, and great teacher to led the way. PLTW courses at classes such as engineering, bio-med, and computer science. Each year, you step into the next level course of the field you chose. These courses involve a lot of hands-on work, such as building VEX machines, designing projects, and lots of dissecting. This school has prepared and motivated me to purse a degree in architecture because of the internship and courses they offered me. I found these experiences lots of fun, and highly educating. Sophomore: In my experience at Middle College High School, I've come across nothing less than admirable students and staff alike. I have been given immense opportunities with college and other aspects to prepare students like me for college. The teachers in the school are understanding and cater to the student's needs. Teachers provided tutoring hours after school that allow students to achieve extra help outside of school. The school is a dual enrollment school. The courses are rigorous, but they allow students to achieve AA degrees and IGETC degrees while in high school. This school is challenging even though students who should apply here know what the school entails, but counselors provide mental health resources for students struggling. Freshman: I have had a lot of positive experiences at King/Drew! There are a lot of people from diverse backgrounds, and I've never felt singled out, or a minority. Everyone is extremely accepting, no matter what your religion, gender identity, sexuality, etc. is. The curriculum is fast-paced, so it's easy to get overwhelmed by the work, which is a major downside, but the school always acknowledges those doing well, or showing improvement for every 5-week report card. They send emails congratulating those with all A's, A's B's, and C's and Bs. An abundance of events and assemblies is happening, which is nice, to get a 75-minute break out of the day along with nutrition and lunch. Overall, King/Drew is an amazing school, even with all the work! They have so many opportunities, like the Career Program, where you go across the street to the hospital, or if you take Biology, you can work in a lab and a makeshift ambulance!
