Covid-19 has sadly cut a swathe through many of the businesses in Blackheath Village. A small department store and even a bank branch has closed, its cash points receiving cards only to regurgitate them after explaining none of their services are any longer available. There were perhaps always far too many cafes and restaurants in the village and a number have closed including Mediterranean restaurant Aqua (as well as its Bromley branch), Cafe Rouge and an Indian restaurant although that promises to be shortly re-born as a burger joint. Pleased to see Buenos Aires steakhouse and Zero Degrees Microbrewery appear to have survived. Am less impressed by the survival of the much over-rated Ivy. Gail’s Bakery appeared remarkably inefficient this Sunday morning with long queues outside whilst Madeleine’s crepery were able to serve diners almost immediately despite having fewer seats.

Beautiful wide open spaces and amazing views from the view point. I have been in London a while now and was very shocked that there was such an awesome view point. Blackheath village is so vibey with many small cafes and health shops.
Love the vibe up in Blackheath

Must correct the numerous errors of previous reviewers - I LIVE in Blackheath and have done do for 5 yrs so take these reviews from me as right and ignore the rest.

1. Blackheath is a planned Georgian village created during 80 years from about 1760 to 1840. It is NOT VICTORIAN in origin and whilst within London is distinctive enough to deserve village status.

2. The RAILWAY pub is great. Food is fantastic especially the handmade chips - clearly those who like MacDonalds stay away. It is a community pub with may special events and deals and no more expensive than anywhere else.

3.loads of lovely places to drink -

Zero Degrees - German brew pub with fab handmade pizzas
Railway - to most residents the best pub in the village.
Crown- recently refurbished 18th century pub - perfect
Princess Louise - great garden at back and the Heath out front- buzzing on summer days.
Irish Pub -ok this is like many others and not my fave.
Hare and Billet - original Highwayman pub on beautiful heathside location.
Cave Austin- lovely garden and my tip for breakfast or brunch. Bit dodgy In evenings.

Royal Standard - this is not strictly in the village but close. And was my local when lived in Westcomebe Park area of Heath. Best place to watch sport and beer good too.

Finally - if you don't like Blackheath go to Woolwich Lewisham Charlton or lee then comeback and review.

I obtained tickets to the annual OnBlackheath food and music festival. I love visiting Blackheath and this event did not disappoint. Gizzi Erskine headed up a lineup of celebrity Chefs that demonstrated the tricks of their trade at the NEFF tent. It was great to get tips from leading chefs which also included Jack Stein (son of Rick Stein). And it was even better to be able to head to the Chef tent after each demonstration to pay a fair price to dine and eat the great good too. In addition to this the event also provided great musical talent from headlining acts such as Massive Attack, Grace Jones and Imelda May. There were many more bands and DJs too all weekend. It was a real family event that catered for young children too and the great mix of food and drink on offer to buy as well as entertainment and street theatre available made this an event worth the price tag that I can recommend for anyone thinking of going next year. A great day out for the whole family.

As a resident of North London I have taken those that have referred to Blackheath as the Hampstead of South London with a fair amount of scepticism. So when given the opportunity to take a tour of the area with a blue badge guide this week, I took it, and am happy to say another area of my ignorance of areas of London south of the Thames has been rectified.
Blackheath Village is very pleasant, and in some ways is better than Hampstead High Street as it seems to have retained specialist independent shops and not befallen being taken over by standard chains which has happened to Hampstead over recent years. Then the residential area to the north East of Blackheath train station is well worth walking through as a route to the heath. Known as the Cator Estate, which was built on part of the estate formerly owned by Sir John Morden, whose Morden College (1695) is another notable building to the south-east of the heath, it contains an interesting mix of building styles including fine examples of substantial Georgian and Victorian houses and more recent architecture from the 60’s, and although clearly an area of some wealth , it doesn’t suffer from the same vulgarities to be seen on Bishops Avenue north of the river.
And although the heath itself is small in comparison to the one in Hampstead and doesn’t have the diversity of landscape and fauna it is still one of the largest areas of common land in Greater London and on a fair weather day the walk across the heath to Greenwich is highly recommended.

Walked up through Greenwich park. Was a lovely day and people were sat around having picnics and just enjoying being outside. Used to do this walk regularly with my parents as i was born in Greenwich. Love this place.

I stumbled across Blackheath, coming through on business. Having been born and raised in the south coast of England, with the wide open spaces covered in grass, the little churches dotted around, the little houses not overcome by high rise buildings.
I came back to the very next day when I had more time, beautiful area, a treasure only 15 minutes away from the City of London; it's worth a visit if you can't actually get away from the city just to get that sense of openness and what the countryside brings, With being so close I will very likely make my next move to Blackheath, the countryside within commuting distance and sight of London.

My partner and I moved to Blackheath from Essex over 7 years ago because we found it beautiful and a very friendly area of London. The Heath is beautiful as is the church and the surrounding architecture is lovely. The Village is great to walk around with all the different little shops (not chain shops) and lovely restaurants and pubs. Spending an evening out is wonderful as there are many restaurants and bars to choose from and the train connection into the centre of London is fast and frequent. Would not live anywhere else and am really proud to live here. There's always something going on and we are near to Greenwich Park too. Love it!

This is a typical small English village with many small shops and restaurants. A nearby park and open field but also a petrochemical plant as its neighbour. The train stops here and it is close to Maritime Greenwich.
