Program Guide 2022/2023

Fifty plus years ago members of the Coquitlam Fine Arts Council (CFAC), established in 1967, had a dream, an idea for an arts centre, a welcoming place where many arts disciplines would be taught by skilled teachers. A place where the work of emerging artists and local artisans could be displayed and sold, and where events and festivals could be held, drawing people together to celebrate the arts. In the early 1970’s when the RCMP detachment moved out of the original Ryan House to a new police station, Fern Bouvier, then president of the CFAC, negotiated with the District of Coquitlam for the use of the Ryan House. The City promised

to provide a grant if the founding group could renovate, then operate the arts centre for one year. Needless to say, the challenge was met, and the dream became a reality when Place des Arts officially opened its doors to the public on December 1, 1972.

Hours of Operation

50 years later, we are still here and proud to continue to uphold the original vision of PdA. Reaching this significant milestone demonstrates the strength of that vision established a half a century ago.

Photographs/Videos

Our success wouldn’t be possible without the support and dedication of so many wonderful people over the years including board members, staff, teachers, artists, volunteers, sponsors, partners, the City of Coquitlam and of course our wonderful patrons who make PdA a vibrant and inspiring place. This season is all about celebrating Place des Arts voices through creative connection, storytelling and joy! Joan McCauley Executive Director

The Red level (3 ½ - 4 ½ years): children begin by building a repertoire of musical experiences. The songs and rhymes learned at this level will be used to discover musical concepts in later years. The goal is to have a fun, positive experience in a group setting. Musical concepts such as fast/slow, loud/soft and higher/lower pitches are taught and children are made aware of beat in music. Get ready for singing, musical games and fun! Parent/ caregiver participation is required.

In this innovative children’s program, students learn the principles of music through singing

The Yellow level (4 ½ - 5 ½ years): has more singing, more games and more FUN! Students begin their first music reading and writing

songs, chanting rhymes, playing music games and using xylophones, the recorder and other instruments. The Musical Rainbow program is based on the Kodály philosophy of using songs and rhymes from children’s folk culture, along with elements of Orff and Suzuki methodology. Note reading, writing and music history are taught in the upper levels. This program provides a solid basic understanding of music and may inspire children to advance their practice at an older age. Supplies are not included. Supply lists can be found on our ActiveNet registration site under the “Notes” section for each class. Gather your supplies before the first day of class. booklets. Hand signs are used to denote awareness of pitch differences, rhythm names are spoken and written in stick notation, and pitch matching and melody charts are used to facilitate in-tune singing. The Green level (5 ½ - 6 ½ years): the music staff is introduced. Children learn to read and write notes on the staff using both absolute pitch names and hand sign names. The students create three booklets using three different keys for reading and writing music. Students begin the recorder at this level. The Blue level (6 ½ - 7 ½ years): students play a lot of recorder. Learning this instrument will give a wonderful head start on learning other instruments when the child is older. The sharp and the flat notes are introduced. Students learn to read and write music using three full major and minor scales. The Purple level (7 ½ - 8 ½ years): students become quite dexterous on the recorder, learning several classical pieces and longer folk and popular pieces by the end of the year. Singing is improved through vocal exercises and solo work. Music theory is expanded on and students compose their own music. There is a lot of part-work, music terms and signs, and still tons of fun at this final level of the MUSICAL RAINBOW!
