"Troubadour" is a very fitting moniker for master singer/songwriter Willie Nelson, who over the years has traveled across-and-back, and up-and-down America and the world, with a hand-picked traveling band that includes his sister. A true minstrel of the road, he has played every kind of music venue that this country has to offer, from stadium-huge to one-horse-small. I first saw Willie in a small nightclub and former slot-machine parlor called The Stardust Inn in Waldorf, Maryland, back in the early '70s. (Shortly after that, I would see his buddy Waylon Jennings perform on the same stage.) At the time, I was lucky enough to have managed several record stores around Washington, D.C. for Empire Music, Inc., which carried among its 27 outlets all forms of music and offered all kinds of "Ticket-Tron" (the Ticketmaster of its day) tickets to music venues. One of our larger outlets in Gaithersburg, MD, was devoted exclusively to Country Music—a thoroughly unique enterprise outside the environs of Nashville. And it was here, in the forgotten corners of the store's poorly lit stockroom, that I discovered, then quickly relegated to the shop's premier selling spot in the front window, albums like Nelson's SHOTGUN WILLIE and PHASES & STAGES, Waylon Jennings' breakthrough HONKY TONK HEROES, and Jerry Jeff Walker's IT'S A GOOD NIGHT FOR SINGING, just as the phenomenon of "Outlaw Country Music" raged like wildfire across the music industry—each of them destined to become classic recordings by the loosely connected Austin-based musicians who would later become widely recognized as Hard Country's most wanted pickers among its clan of "outlaws." And always foremost among this conclave of mega-talented singer-songwriters and musicians was Willie Nelson, The Red-Headed Stranger, and his singular brand of country music, with a formula comprising a large measure of Texas Swing, a pinch of Nashville, equal elements of gospel and Guthrie-styled folk, and with a twist of Cowboy Poetry thrown into the mix. Now he is a legend in his own time; but back then he was a unique voice, a "barroom bard," just beginning to shuffle off his Nashville restraints and find his own sound—and it was a sound not so much rebellious, as it was "defiantly refreshing" from the stagnant sounds that had come out of Tennessee for much too long. (Now, sadly, that stagnation has returned with boring repetition in the form of the "New Country," "Modern Country," or whatever they're calling it this week, growing fat and lazy, settling into the same rote, nap-inducing patterns of their Twitty-Tubb forebears.) But in the '70s, Nelson was a fresh and exciting sound experience, even though he had been around for years, singing in those small clubs while writing immortal tunes like HELLO WALLS, CRAZY, and FAMILY BIBLE. And he has remained on the cutting edge of what one considers "true" or "classic" country music. When Jennings and Cash were busy creating music on a broader, rock- or folk-influenced plane, it sometimes seemed like Nelson stood alone in his ability to bring new riffs to old standards and single-handedly breathe new life into Country Music. ONE HELL OF A RIDE serves to showcase Willie Nelson's lone vision, and his remarkable ability to see beyond the limits of commercial success, although he has experienced that more than most. Innovation is a weak word when applied to him—he is peerless in making music with not only fellow country music standouts, but with masters of jazz, pop, rock, and international artists. This collection of songs, spanning a large segment of an ongoing exploration of music, should be included in every music library, no matter what one's primary music genre preference might be. Listening to his tunes, you feel that his music is all-encompassing. You hear elements of modern expression existing side-by-side with genres long-past, of long gone, internet-free radio days, of hard times inspiring the first Farm-Aid event, of concert-influenced riffs when he was "on the road again," of a red-and-gray-haired lone wolf sitting on a weathered porch plucking nylon strings under a Texas sunset—these elements are heard in this retrospective. And if that sounds corny and overly romantic, that's because at its core country music seems to have exclusive music rights to overly romantic corn. But fortunately, Willie Nelson is ever at the helm, navigating us throughout ONE HELL OF A RIDE. I cannot recommend this compilation 4-CD set highly enough. I am primarily a Blue Note jazz fan. But I can say with equal enthusiasm, I am a Willie Nelson fan. You will never regret purchasing this collection.

Having heard "On the Road Again" way too many times on the radio, I've always tended to tune out Willie as my music preference usually tends to lean more towards rock and roll. But I've found as I get older, I'm liking music that that's a little mellower than what I've listened to for most of my life.
After seeing Willie perform on TV one night, I decided it was time to add some of his music to my collection. Recommendations quickly pointed me towards this collection. What else can I say, but wow. This is an incredible collection of Willie's work throughout the decades, and I enjoy it immensely. One of the best music purchases I've made in many years.

Any problems that may have previously existed have been fixed. My copy arrived on 2/9/2020. My copy plays perfectly on all tracks. By the way, it is an absolutely wonderful box set.

I love this collection. It is a great overview of his career. I read some of the other reviews and I think that the critical ones were overstated. The discs played fine and the sound quality is excellent.

For the most part this is a good overview of Willie's career in music and unlike many other collections this one gives us a good helping of his earlier songs long before the bandana, pony tails and beard, when he was writing great songs like Hello Walls and Crazy and he sang them with a unique style that nobody has ever duplicated. On FOUR discs "One Hell Of A Ride" delivers all of the biggest hits and much, much more, this collection is probably all the Willie that the casual fan would ever need.
With that being said I give One Hell Of A Ride 4 out of 5 stars only because some of it's songs are live versions or alternate cuts, so it's not as good as it could be but it is still a good overview of a Texas music legend and I would recommend it to anyone who would like a comprehensive representation of his work.

This purchase was a worthwhile investment to my music collection...I did not fully realize what I acquired until I took time to listen and enjoy each CD! I especially treasure the "Duets" which demonstrate Willie can sing and harmonize with any artist..."Old Friends" is my favorite.
I am confident that anybody who purchases "One Hell Of a Ride" will be equally satisfied!

This has many hard to find cuts, some found nowhere else like ( Johnny One Time ) so it's worth the money at least to me. Some cuts are live but they were only done live so that's fine. Normally I feel cheated when live cuts replace the studio cuts that were the Hits but that is not the case here.

Superbe rétrospective d'un grand artiste
Reviewed in France on August 5, 2018
On the road again, Funny how time slips away... Bravo Mr Nelson!

a great box set including a comprehensive representation of the work of one of Country Music's Giants.......

A great box set at a good price.
This purchase is a no brainer for the person who appreciates Willie but does not already own a lot of his albums.
In my case, I was a little disappointed at the number of tracks that I already owned. But that's my fault for not paying more attention prior to buying it.

Willie Nelson is an absolute genius, as original as he is talented and deserves much more recognition than he ever gets. This set therefore, is a must for all Willie Nelson fans.
As a long term fan, I must admit that there are some unusual song choices here, but all in all this is a great career retrospective.
As anyone in the know will tell you, Willie Nelson doesn't know how to make a bad record, but if he did, it would probably be the best bad record ever made. So do yourself a favour, buy this set, play it often and, if you don't like it, you clearly have severe mental health issues and should seek immediate medical assistence.
