Most of the musical theatre songs I performed on my 1983 album ‘Stages’ (“Don’t Cry For Me Argentina”, “Memory” etc.) were songs with which I had some personal connection, great or small (the songs were great, I’m small).

When Tony Visconti and I decided to make my 1984 album, a selection of outstanding movie songs there was not a lot of material available from my own film career. Had we relied on that source we would have been pushed to produce a single. In fact we did! “Sometimes” written by Norman Newell & Carl Davis which was used in the film ‘Champion’ – the story of British jockey Bob Champion. But back to the album ….Undaunted, we ignored the music from ‘Confessions Of A Plumber’s Mate’ and others from my pre-Evita triumphs and instead spent two enjoyable months choosing a dozen great cinema songs purely because they were great.

Note: ‘Cinema’ was a top 20 hit on the British album chart and attained a Platinum certification by the BPI (The British Recorded Music Industry) for sales in the UK – this award marks sales of 300,000 units of an individual album title to UK retailers.
