Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson have been making waves in the acting industry in recent years, but their relationship on the Red Notice set might mean we won’t see them star alongside each other in another film soon. The Rock has become known for his impeccable hard work ethic, as seen in his workout routine and numerous films that have made millions at the box office. So, it came as a shock to many when reports came out that the WWE star would arrive very late to movie sets and, on other days, not show up at all.

Dwayne Johnson's behavior on the set of Netflix's Red Notice reportedly angered his co-star Ryan Reynolds to the extent that they had a confrontation during filming about Johnson's behavior. The duo butted heads about Dwayne Johnson's lateness, and this might be the reason a sequel to the successful film hasn't materialized after almost three years since the first film - which became one of Netflix's most-watched movies.

So, when they teamed up for Netflix’s Red Notice alongside Gal Gadot, it made for a huge action film. However, the two movie stars struggled to get along on set due to their different work ethics. Johnson has appeared in over sixty movies in his career.

In 2019 alone, he starred in four films, Jumanji: The Next Level, Jungle Cruise, Fighting with My Family, and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, which shows his commitment to acting. Dwayne Johnson's Accusations Paint An Uglier Picture Of Working With Him Than His Co-Stars Have Previously Claimed
Dwayne Johnson has many co-stars who adore him but accusations have come out that claim he can be a nightmare to work with.

Reports from The Wrap claimed while filming Netflix’s Red Notice; Johnson would make the cast and crew wait for close to eight hours before he would arrive on set. Considering Red Notice was filmed at a time when movie sets were strained while filming during the COVID pandemic, it cost production millions to work around Dwayne Johnson.

Reynolds reportedly took offense to Johnson’s behavior and confronted him one day when he arrived late on set. Sources claimed the Deadpool star let Johnson know his tardiness was ruining the atmosphere on set, and after that, his behavior changed for the better. Johnson and Reynolds continued to film and do press tours together without any hitches, but reportedly did not talk for a few years.

Red Notice was released in 2021, and despite getting bombed by critics, it was a fan-favorite for Netflix viewers. Despite the critics' 37% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film did well because of Gadot, Johnson, and Reynold's appearances, becoming one of the most-watched movies on Netflix. Still, nearly three years later, there has yet to be an update on Red Notice 2. This comes after reports confirmed the sequel's script has already been written, and Gal Gadot has read it.

Even Dwayne Johnson himself was surprised about the reaction he got after making a particular statement.

If Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson’s relationship is still on shaky ground, it could explain why it has taken years for Red Notice 2 to be filmed. The show relies heavily on the two main stars’ chemistry; the movie might be a flop without it. If reports from Dwayne Johnson’s other films are anything to go by, his tardiness is causing the delay in his upcoming projects such as Red One.

A source close to Red One’s production revealed that the WWE star would not only arrive late to set but also fail to show up on other days. This led to production incurring costs of up to 50 million over their budget. Another insider said,

“It was a f***ing disaster. Dwayne truly doesn’t give a f***”

Regardless of the reports, production denied them, adding, “It was completely normal for there to be budget fluctuations within 15% of the target, which is exactly what we experienced.”

Though reports that Dwayne Johnson’s behavior on set prove he was challenging to work with, it makes sense why Ryan Reynolds was hesitant to join in for a Red Notice sequel. After the tardiness reports came out, a spokesperson for the studio behind Red One, Amazon MGM, released a statement rubbishing the rumors. The studio rep claimed the movie’s producer, Seven Buck and The Rock, worked well together and were incredible partners.

“We couldn’t have made it without Dwayne’s constant work and support. Any reporting that implies we got to this point with him showing up seven-eight hours late to set is both ridiculous and false.”

The source told TMZ, despite the damaging rumors about Johnson's behavior on set, he and Reynolds have a decent relationship these days, adding that they resolved their issues professionally. Since several reputable sources have rubbished the reports that The Rock comes late on set, he and Reynolds will likely return for a sequel to the Netflix film.

Production of Red Notice 2 was slated to begin in early 2023, but it was delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. 2024 was a busy year for Reynolds and Johnson, which might have delayed the film's production. Reynolds has been filming Deadpool 3, while The Rock has been working on the Wrestlemania 40 season between March and April 2024. Due to their busy schedules, production on Red Notice 2 will likely begin later in 2024.
