Editorial Reviews
2010 release, an installment in the Ace Records label's producer-based series. This successful series continues with a bumper collection devoted to the most famous record producer there ever was, the one and only Phil Spector. Compiled by arch Spector buffs Rob Finnis and Mick Patrick, the set focuses on the legendary eccentric's early work, with all titles drawn from the 1958 to early 1963 time frame. 28 tracks including cuts from Ben E. King, the Creations, Billy Storm, the Ducanes, LaVern Baker, Gene Pitney and many others. Ace.

SIDE ONE NOTES
1.) Where it all began, it was also a #10 R&B hit for 17-year-old Phil. 2.) Another bestseller, this was #7 for a month. Classic doowop, but with the unique addition of finger cymbals and tight orchestration. 3.) By a six man unit, it's the B side to their remake of a Teenchords single. 4.) A Wall of Sound precursor, it includes tympani rolls. 5.) Ballad with a "daum-daumy-daum" refrain. 6.) Phil lavished much attention and borrowed cash on this fine Goffin/King tune that became a Pitney classic.
SIDE TWO NOTES
1.) A perfect little pop symphony. Perfectionist Spector worked for weeks on the arrangement, vocals, mixes and remixes. 2.) A frenzied 'A' side with indecipherable lyrics from a talented NJ group that never made it big. This was an East Coast hit but it tanked nationally. 3.) Pitney's B side is almost as complex as "Every Breath I Take." 4.) The followup to "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" is an imitation of Freddy Cannon or Gary US Bonds that may have doomed it to barely breaking into the Top 50. 5.) An atmospheric, echoey track reminiscent of the Fleetwoods, it was a non-charter. 6.) Goffin/King ballad with gentle strings is their followup to "I Love How You Love Me."
Includes release dates, plus peak Billboard Hot 100 chart positions (where applicable).
All tracks mono, except (E) = electronically simulated stereo
