The return of NZ's most unique musical artiste'
Judd has lost none of his musical prowess. He plays everything on this and, musically it's probably better, even, than his previous output. I imagine having a decent home studio is a godsend to someone as imaginative and exacting as Judd. He can tinker away on his creations to his hearts content. My main problem with 'Novelty Act' are the lyrics and the larrakin blokeish vocal delivery. I know they're supposed to be light hearted and amusing, but I find a lot of them to be infantile and inconsequential and as such they negatively affect my enjoyment of the album. Some stunning music to be had here though.... I mean it.... really!

It's good...really. It's Phil Judd fer chrissakes, what did you expect? Check out early Split Enz and come back to this.

Well produced in a way that doesn't get in the way of the sort of trailer-living dreamer persona that Mr. Judd embraces here. Not quite an itinerant headlining entertainer, more like tales from a traveling supporting cast member off-season.
Sadness. Happiness. Delusion. Realization. All the great lyrical themes, tracing a line at the edge of madness … but never really crossing over … because it's territory the teller has already explored. Just lookin' over the edge … checkin' out the view, from behind.
Drumming reminds me of Ringo Starr, played just behind the beat, opening up many of the songs. Also, a very un-Hawaiian use of the ukelele.
Sad and creepy rarely elicits sympathy, but you feel it for the stories he sings.
