Robbie developed a keen interest in psychology and biology at a young age, and dreamt of one day becoming a psychiatrist.

After graduating from high school, Robbie enrolled into medical school at Monash University. During his University training, Robbie received several academic accolades. He was awarded a Scholarship to study a semester of medicine in Malaysia (in 2011). Two years later he received a John Murtagh First Wave Medical Scholarship. In 2014, Robbie travelled to New York City where he undertook a research Honours Degree in Medical Science (BMedSc Hons), at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in Manhattan. Robbie then returned to Australia and finished his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, which was awarded with Honours (MBBS Hons). He was bestowed the Harry Hindlip-Green Prize for Medicine in his graduating cohort. He also graduated from Monash University with a Diploma of Philosophy, undertaken alongside his medical degrees.

Dr Gillies subsequently began working as a general medical doctor at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. During his junior medical career he completed a Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (MPH&TM), and a Master of Psychiatric Medicine (MPM). Whilst working as a doctor, he also became a lecturer of medicine and psychiatry at Monash University and was frequently an invited guest speaker at medical conferences. He produced educational podcasts on medical topics, published original scientific research in peer-reviewed medical journals, and presented his research findings at academic meetings.

Outside of his professional career, Dr Gillies made time to contribute to several community projects. He played the Double Bass with the Australian Doctors Orchestra, sport with a number of amateur clubs, and volunteered for different charities. Wanting to do more than volunteer, Dr Gillies established a number of not-for-profit and non-government organisations to fundraise for important causes. He is the proud Co-Founder of Dream Larger, Yarra Swim Co, Conscious Creative Ltd, Charity Tap, and HoMie.

At age 29, Dr Gillies received an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for his contributions to his community.
