      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

American Rust's tale of America lost is a worthy one, but despite an A-list cast it simply doesn't have the narrative clarity or heft necessary to do its subject matter justice.

Deborah Ross The Mail on Sunday (UK) American Rust is being billed as 'the new Mare Of Easttown'. And it isn't. In its dreams, you might even add. Rated: 2/5 Dec 6, 2021 Full Review Hugo Rifkind Times (UK) What, even your rust is special now? Dec 4, 2021 Full Review Fiona Sturges Financial Times American Rust is relentlessly, oppressively gloomy. Rated: 2/5 Nov 29, 2021 Full Review Akos Peterbencze Vulnerable Man (Medium) The writing is flawed, lacks coherence and direction, and eventually anchors the two aspects the series has going for it: characters and atmosphere. Jul 24, 2023 Full Review Susan Granger www.susangranger.com Just like that collapsed bridge in Pittsburgh, 'American Rust' - filmed in and around that city - demonstrates the ruination or what can happen when a crime drama isn't properly developed or cared for, making it of little use to anyone. Jasmine B All i can say is that for once i agree with the critics. This series was contrived in its entire delivery, from the characterization of the town, to the cops, and the actions of the players. But the main thing is, i found EVERY character, except for Jeff Daniel’s, to be super annoying…couldnt stand the mother of Billy, couldnt stand Billy’s ex girlfriend, his buddy (cant remember his name) was just weird, and Billy himself, annoying. And for the one decent guy in the series, why would the chief of police be attracted to Billy’s mother, as there’s nothing redeeming about her. I couldnt watch anymore after the wedding episode, i mean come on, people dont act like that, the gyrating and the dancing…its just a bunch of actors overacting and acting like a bunch of annoying…dorks! I had to LOL when they continued to pan to Billy who was nodding and bobbing his head to the music…they kept returning to him, annoyingly so, and on top of that, the dancing at the wedding was ridiculous and went on for WAY too long. Also, what’s up with Billy’s mullet, and why was he dressed like The Joker at the wedding? All in all, it’s Just really really BAD acting, and a really stupid show. This is a typical ‘Prime’ series, of which most of their programming is trash…it’s a cheap version of many other better made and acted shows, i.e. Marre of Eastown. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/05/24 Full Review William N Unlikeable characters who continuously make horrible decisions. The crime drama aspect of the series is decent but far from great. There are some ridiculous storylines like the Isaac storyline which was irrelevant to the main plot. The mother of Billy attempting to unionize a small rundown textile factory was absolutely ridiculous and another storyline that was irrelevant to the main plot. Overall the story portrays the same old cliches about people in small towns being trapped and wanting to escape to the big city. Those that are left in the small town are hopeless and feel sorry for themselves all the time. Billy Poe was insufferable towards the end making horrible decisions. The one thing this series got right was the look of a small town in southwestern Pennsylvania. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 05/04/24 Full Review Nancy M We binged through season 2. Season 1 seemed to be setting the stage, developing characters. We thought season 1 was a little slow, a little dark — but hang in there, it’s worth it. In season 2 it picks up momentum and the plot is very good with unexpected twists. The performances are fantastic. We hope there’s a season 3. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/01/24 Full Review Audience Member Really good show, the first couple episodes are a little slow, that didn't bother me because the characters and plot are interesting enough to keep you watching. I just binged both seasons and hope they pick it up for a 3rd. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/16/24 Full Review Flecia M A little late to this series and I don't think it's gotten the credit it deserves. I'd really give it 3 5 stars. A police chief who's trying to live a quiet uneventful life, a mother who would do whatever it takes for her son and friends who are loyal to a fault! I enjoyed the gritty small town vibe. The casting is well suited. The first season felt like a decent setup for building into better plot scenarios. I don't recall very much promotion for this show and there's a long time period between seasons one and two. I'm sure those factors didn't help it's situation but hopefully it will pickup some much needed followers with the release of season two.
