More bad boxes today, Paul Revere & the Raiders records were so destroyed that I don’t think there would be much left if they were dried and de-moulded. It’s so sad seeing artefacts from the sixties in this condition. They have survived for so long and now they are gone. But I find myself in a state of exhilaration when I open the box with Peter Perrett, The Only Ones and Annette Peacock to find them undamaged. I think there must be 1000 damaged records. I found Gilmour – Live at Pompeii (2017) in perfect condition, the box for Live in Gdańsk (2008), now dried, is a crinkled mess and yes, the records are in perfect condition but the cover art is so important – I’m dreading finding the Butcher cover. The Gdańsk box still had its shrink wrap, but the water got in anyway and the mould grew even worse under the plastic. I’m trying to be positive but freaking out every time I open a box, waiting to know if it’s disaster or not.
It’s a slow progress, but I’m trying to get the records that don’t need attention into the shelves and then coming back to the ones that do with more space and more boxes gone because the boxes still take up a lot of space and we need to move them to put up more shelves and have a ‘rescue area’. There are 2,500–3000 classical records – how did that happen? We need to put them in the front, so there is space for all the soul/reggae/jazz/blues and all the records from The Netherlands, Iceland, Italy, Germany, France, Scandinavia and more. Today I found all the Neneh Cherry records damaged. When will it stop?
PSG made a surprising advancement to the next stage of the Champions League semi-final, winning 1-4 in Barcelona. Barcelona had a man sent off. Atlético also lost, so it’s a Dortmund/PSG semi-final. Man City/Real Madrid and Arsenal/Bayern tomorrow. If you like football, this is quality stuff.
I had a sesh with Jed late at 11.30 at night. We’ve been working on some odd chords and arrangements with Jed weaving in some odd melodies. I told him next writing sesh we should try something simple, but we’ve written a lot of songs together for Space Summit, you go down rabbit holes, investigate the burrows and then once you’re out, you might need to bask in the light instead of scurrying around in the melodic darkness.
Music today has been Annette Peacock – I’m the One (1972). I love this record – it’s experimental soul, rock, jazz, blues, brilliance, and it’s not damaged.
