Middle School Choices

Welcome to JCPS!

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) engages each and every student through effective teaching in a caring, supportive environment. We offer a variety of learning opportunities through unique schools, programs, and activities that will inspire your child to reach their fullest potential.

This booklet will help you learn about the special qualities that each individual middle school can provide your child and family. With nearly 30 middle schools, there are varied and differentiated academic experiences for every kind of learner, while maintaining a focus on our three main pillars: Backpack of Success Skills, Racial Equity, and Culture and Climate.

Every JCPS middle school has dedicated and experienced teachers, technology for every student, family support services, and engaging after-school programming. They all contribute to our students' sense of belonging while teaching them core skills, like reading and math. But your student will also discover new worlds of art, music, and foreign languages as they learn to communicate and flourish in a constantly changing world. Our staff understands that middle school students need some direction, encouragement, and equitable support as they continue building their academic and interpersonal skills.

The 2024-25 school year will be the second in which all students have had the opportunity to choose and attend a school close to their home. We’re proud that the Jefferson County Board of Education (JCBE) created these opportunities by approving our School Choice Proposal in 2022. We’re finding that families, particularly those in the Choice Zone, are taking advantage of the option to attend a school near their neighborhood, creating more opportunities for students and their families to participate in after-school activities and generating significant pride in their school.

Many of our middle schools also have Explore Pathways—a chance for students to get a taste of a possible career path or a link to one of our high school Academies of Louisville Programs.

Please take the time to review the multitude of offerings we have available and determine how they align with the learning style and interests of your child.

At JCPS, our mission is to always do what’s best for our students. We hope this booklet will help you determine what’s best for your child.

Let’s Get Started

JCPS has more than two dozen middle schools, ensuring students from all backgrounds can find a sense of belonging. With nationally recognized teachers and programs, we are proud to provide an array of choices to best serve our students throughout the district.

Important to Note

  • Submitting a magnet application doesn’t guarantee admission, and submitting false information will void an application.

  • Waiting lists are not kept from year to year.

  • Magnet applications can only be edited during the magnet application period. If changes are made, only the most recent changes are considered.

  • Siblings of current or former magnet school students do not receive preference in the application process. However, applications for siblings who share the same birth date (twins, triplets, etc.) who are applying to a magnet that utilizes a lottery will be treated as one application. In these cases, parents must submit a separate application for each child.

  • Students who apply during the application period will be notified of the status of their application by April 2024

  • Students must be a resident of Jefferson County to attend a magnet school or program. If families are relocating, they should contact the JCPS School Choice Office at (502) 485-6250.

What Are Your Next Steps?

Review Options

Decide what type of learning environment works best for your child, and explore* school options, programs, and/or offerings at each school.

Choose School

Every student will find a sense of belonging at JCPS. To find that space for your child, start by compiling a list of schools that best fit their needs and aspirations.

a. Resides school

  • Current students: No application is needed. You will be auto-enrolled.

  • New to JCPS: Contact the school (not the district) if you're new to JCPS. Proof of address is required.

b. Choice Zone* students

  • You can attend either your close-to-home option or the school designated for your address that is farther away. This is only for incoming sixth graders, middle school students new to the district, or middle school students with a new address. An application is required to make your selection.

c. Magnet school

  • Apply: If your choice is outside of your resides school boundary, you can select up to two magnet schools or programs. Apply during the application period: November 6–December 22, 2023. Students applying during the application period will be notified of the status of their application by April 2024

d. Traditional magnet school

  • You’ll be auto-enrolled**: If you are currently enrolled in a JCPS traditional magnet elementary school, no application is necessary. You will be automatically enrolled in the traditional magnet middle school that serves your home address.

**You must apply to a traditional magnet middle school if you are not currently enrolled in a traditional magnet elementary school.

Explore

Explore Pathways provide a clear focus for learning and engagement through an introduction to Career and Technical Education (CTE) in middle school. The model provides purpose and vision for students and creates a sixth- through twelfth-grade pathway of learning by serving as a bridge between middle and high school. Engagement, exposure, and equity are the heart of Explore. The goal is to give our students choices and opportunities early on to get them excited about their futures.

Explore was designed with the social and emotional needs of middle school students  in mind. We know that students thrive when they have choices in their learning and feel a sense of belonging. Through Explore, students will go through a rotation of pathway offerings in sixth grade. Then at the end of sixth grade, they will choose their seventh- and eighth-grade pathway in a special selection ceremony. Over the next two years, students will experience project-based learning, guest speakers, field trips to local high schools, and the creation of a capstone Backpack of Success Skills artifact that connects to their passion.

Explore is not about students choosing a career; it's about hands-on learning and student choice during a time when many students can easily become disengaged. Prior to Explore, students had to choose between taking art and music-based electives or pursuing CTE electives, such as robotics or healthcare. Now, due to funding and staffing, kids get to have both. It’s a win-win for everyone.

All students in Explore schools will have access to the Explore learning experience; students don't need to apply for Explore itself. Explore is not a magnet program. It is a new way of structuring learning in middle school to focus on Design Thinking and real-world experiences. Currently, there are five pathways aligned with the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) Career Clusters. Eight JCPS middle schools offer samplings of the pathways as they connect to the Academies of Louisville offerings at the high school level.

Business and Communication: Students will learn all aspects of business, leadership, and marketing. A student in this pathway could focus on personal finance, entrepreneurship, digital citizenship, marketing and advertising, communication and journalism, developing sales strategies, and business planning.

Consumer Science: Students can explore the complexity of personal growth, family dynamics, and early childhood development. They’ll research employability skills and the human connection with economics. They’ll explore the worlds of culinary and food services as well as fashion and interior design. Finally, students can discover the world of agribusiness, where they’ll focus on the systems found in our natural world, from food science to renewable energy.

Engineering and Design: Students will learn about the design process from start to finish. They will apply knowledge to learning through such avenues as robotics, coding, architecture, construction, 3D graphic design, and building models.

Healthcare Science: Students will engage in activities focused on the medical field. From first aid/CPR, to biology, to sports medicine, to the multiple careers in healthcare, students will learn the skills needed to be successful not only in today’s medical setting but also in life.

Public Service: Students will explore government structures, law, and education as they pertain to local, state, and national communities. Students will experience mock trials, disaster planning, and emergency response scenarios and will develop leadership skills while they work to enact positive change

Choice Zone Schools

Students who live in the Choice Zone  can attend either their  close-to-home option or the school designated for their  address that is farther away. Incoming sixth-grade students, students new to JCPS, or students with an address change in the Choice Zone must complete an application to make their close-to-home or far-away school selection. There is no default school. Students can update their selection annually. All students may also apply for magnets and transfers.

The example to the right shows the middle school choices of a student who lives in the Ballard High School Choice Zone. This student’s close-to-home options are Dr. J Blaine Hudson Middle School or the Academy @ Shawnee. Their far-away option is Kammerer Middle School. Students will rank their close-to-home options. Although the Academy @ Shawnee is a magnet school, the district is committed to offering additional choices for students in the Choice Zone. The district will automatically admit students who select the Academy @ Shawnee based on building capacity.
