Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.

Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. ★★★★

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. is a delightful & tender coming-of-age story. This film harkens back to the most awkward & curious stages of adolescence in a magnificent fashion. It does an excellent job of exploring puberty, friendships, religion, and just trying to navigate yourself at such an odd age. Kelly Fremon Craig did a wonderful job writing & directing here portraying an immensely heartwarming story that I honestly ate up almost all of this. This film had me thinking back to my middle school years and moments you just look back to now which are just so hilariously embarrassing. There are so many sweet and wholesome moments as well as some great genuine laughs as well. Particularly a recurring bit “we must increase our bust” that was just so ridiculously funny and well played out. The film has a very good soundtrack that just adds to that nostalgic feeling. Thematically it brings up how silly & pointless it is to rush growing up and how much of a waste that can be. The ensemble here is honestly fantastic as it brings a couple powerhouse actors and some newcomers as well. Abby Ryder Fortson who i’ve seen very briefly before in the “Ant-Man” movies does an outstanding job as “Margaret.” She’s absolutely adorable here as you’re bound to love her character and root for her. Elle Graham whom I hadn’t seen before is very energetic and brings a bunch of comedic relief. Rachel McAdams is like a ball of sunshine in the film and crushes it once more here displaying a very supportive mother with a bit more depth. Kathy Bates & Benny Safdie are both fine additions to the film as they’re not given too much to do here but still do a very good job. However, I do think some segments or bits go on overly long and outdo their stay or just falls short of missing the mark at times. I also think some elements weren’t explored enough and could’ve been dove into a little more. Lastly, I do believe the ending could’ve been a tad better and had the makings for something more. Overall, this really is just the definition of a comfort movie and I would love to give this a rewatch. I’m gonna give Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. a 75% 🏆.
