As his American Horror Story franchise continues to grow, Ryan Murphy has unveiled the first teaser for his new horror show, Grotesquerie. Murphy has become one of the most recognizable names in the world of TV horror in the past 13 years thanks to his creation of the aforementioned FX anthology show, as well as its spinoff American Horror Stories and short-lived satirical comedy Scream Queens. More recently, he has spread his creativity to Netflix with the likes of Ratched, Monster and The Watcher.

Taking to his Instagram, Murphy has revealed the surprise first teaser for his new horror drama on FX entitled Grotesquerie.

The teaser, as seen above, doesn't feature any actual footage from the show, but instead audio from Niecy Nash-Betts' unknown character giving a narration of her investigation of a terrifying crime scene. The video also reveals that the show will feature American Crime Story star Courtney B. Vance and Oscar nominee Lesley Manville.

What Could Grotesquerie Be?

Murphy is certainly no stranger to surprise projects, with his American Horror Story franchise often keeping the subjects of their plots under wraps until closer to their releases in order to keep audiences guessing. Early in the show's run, many of his secret projects were often associated with the FX property, with its anthology plans steadily unveiled across each new season. Unlike many of these prior announcements, however, the Grotesquerie teaser outright confirms that it is an "All-New Horror Drama", situating itself outside of Murphy's prior horror franchise.

American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy is one of the busiest producers in Hollywood. Here are all of the projects Murphy is currently working on.

While the show's first teaser may not offer much in the way of concrete plot details, it does seemingly offer some proper insight into what it will be about. Based on her monologue in the video, Nash-Betts' unknown character appears to hold a deeper connection to the spiritual side of things, acknowledging the sense of evil in the world that "nobody sees but me". Her note of having "shrinks" sent to the specific crime scene from the teaser also potentially points to her being some kind of therapist hired to investigate bizarre or unorthodox crimes.

If this proves to be true, Grotesquerie could end up being Murphy's take on the acclaimed True Detective franchise, putting Nash-Betts as an off-kilter investigator caught up in a case that meets their sensibilities. Given Murphy's flair for horror-driven fare, it seems likely that it will deviate from the HBO hit, though it would also mark a promising change of pace for the six-time Emmy winner to tackle a more mystery-driven story over his usually extravagant horror fare. With no release date currently set, it will be interesting to see when FX and Murphy begin unveiling new details for Grotesquerie.
