A ‘Barbarella’ Movie Starring Sydney Sweeney is Rumoured

The much-anticipated ‘Barbarella’ film, led by Sydney Sweeney, is beginning to take shape with Edgar Wright in discussions to direct the project for Sony. Jane Goldman and Honey Ross are also in talks to write the script.

Edgar Wright, renowned for his satirical zombie comedy ‘Shaun of the Dead,’ is currently set to direct Glen Powell in an adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘The Running Man.’ Wright’s impressive portfolio also includes ‘Last Night in Soho,’ ‘Hot Fuzz,’ ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ and ‘Baby Driver.’

This project marks another significant collaboration between Sweeney and Sony Pictures. Recently, she starred in ‘Anyone but You’ and ‘Madame Web’ for the studio. While ‘Madame Web’ received mixed reviews from critics, Sweeney described her participation in the film as a “strategic business decision” that has since proven beneficial.

“To me, that film was a building block. It’s what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony,” Sweeney explained. “Without doing ‘Madame Web’ I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there. Everything in my career I do is not just for that story, but strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell ‘Anyone but You.’ I was able to get ‘Barbarella.’”

Sweeney first confirmed her involvement with ‘Barbarella’ in October 2022, sharing an image of the iconic heroine with the caption, “Time to save the universe.”

The original ‘Barbarella,’ based on the comic series by French writer and illustrator Jean-Claude Forest, starred Jane Fonda as the eponymous space-travelling heroine. While the 1968 film did not achieve great box office success, it has since become a cult classic, with Barbarella being one of Fonda’s most memorable roles.

There have been several attempts over the years to revive ‘Barbarella’ for modern audiences, though none have come to fruition. Jane Fonda herself expressed some reservations about the reboot in 2023, stating, “I worry about what it’s going to be.”
