It's five years since Tottenham's amazing win over Ajax, here's where every player involved is now - The Spurs News

Five years have now passed since that night in Amsterdam as Lucas Moura booked Tottenham Hotspur’s place in the 2018/19 Champions League final.

Since, Tottenham have endured a turbulent patch in their recent history with the club having dropped out of Europe completely last season.

Things look a lot more positive now with Ange Postecoglou in the dugout as the Australian has put Spurs back in touching distance of the top four.

But regardless of whether the 58-year-old is able to take Spurs on to ending their allusive trophy drought, that night in Amsterdam will likely remain the highlight for many Tottenham fans.

Having found themselves a goal behind after the first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – through a Donny van de Beek goal – Spurs couldn’t have gotten off to a worse start at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Goals from Matthijs de Ligt and Hakim Ziyech put Spurs even further behind in the tie and left them with three goals to find with 45 minutes remaining.

Up stepped Lucas Moura. The Brazilian put on a scintillating second half display which etched his name into Tottenham’s history books.

Everyone knows how that night in Amsterdam panned out, but five years have now passed and The Spurs News have taken a look at where each player from Mauricio Pochettino’s starting XI are now.

Hugo Lloris – LAFC

The former Tottenham captain has only just recently moved on after spending over 12 years in north London.

When Ange Postecoglou arrived, it became apparent Lloris would no longer be the number one with Guglielmo Vicario being brought in over the summer.

France’s former captain has now made the move across the world where he is playing in the MLS with LAFC – following in the footsteps of Spurs legend Gareth Bale.

And he has already had a taste of what the variety of climates which the MLS can provide over the course of a season.

Kieran Trippier – Newcastle United

With Kyle Walker’s Manchester City knocked out of the quarter finals by Spurs, the England right-back had to watch his successor in Kieran Trippier play for Spurs in the semi finals.

Trippier’s time at Spurs had a disappointing end on the back of a poor season for the Englishman which saw Spurs offload him to Atletico Madrid.

And as many will now be well aware, the 33-year-old is now back playing in the Premier League with Newcastle United who sit just four points adrift of Tottenham.

Toby Alderweireld – Royal Antwerp

One half of the last great centre-back partnership at Tottenham, Toby Alderweireld has one of the best stories since leaving Spurs.

The Belgian has returned to his motherland and is now playing in his hometown of Antwerp.

On the final day of last season, the centre-back scored a stunning last-gasp goal to win Royal Antwerp the Belgian crown.

Alderweireld is a fan favourite at Tottenham but what he done at Antwerp was something which will have his name in their history for eternity.

Jan Vertonghen – Anderlecht

And the other half of the great defensive partnership departed Tottenham for Benfica in 2020 ending an eight-year stint in north London.

After two years in Portugal, the Belgian also returned home with a move to Anderlecht.

Since leaving Tottenham, the Belgian has become his nation’s most capped footballer with a staggering total of 154 games.

Danny Rose – Without club

One England’s first-choice left-back, Danny Rose’s exit from Spurs did leave the club with a hole which has only really been filled now with Destiny Udogie.

The Yorkshireman certainly enjoyed the celebrations after the game in front of the travelling Spurs fans but his time at the club did quickly come to an end in the following months.

Rose has now been without a club since he left Watford in 2022, but he has been seen in and around the club since then.

Moussa Sissoko – FC Nantes

Moussa Sissoko’s time at Tottenham was turbulent to say the very least. He was very much marmite with the fans but was awarded the club’s Legends’ Player of the Year for the 2018/19 campaign.

The Frenchman played the full 90 minutes in Amsterdam and lasted 74 minutes carrying a yellow card.

However, he left Spurs in 2021 for Watford before making a return to his homeland with FC Nantes.

Victor Wanyama – Montreal

Victor Wanyama departed north London the following year after racking up 97 appearances for the Lilywhites.

The Kenyan midfielder provided a more defensive alternative to Mousa Dembele in the middle of the park, but he was withdrawn at half time on the night for Fernando Llorente.

After leaving Tottenham, the 32-year-old has since become a Canadian Cup winner in his first season with the MLS club.

Christian Eriksen – Manchester United

Having left Tottenham for Inter Milan, Christian Eriksen’s career took a major twist with his horrendous incident in the 2020 Euros.

Brentford offered him his return to football before he moved on to Manchester United where the Dane has been unable to rediscover his best form.

With the summer transfer window approaching, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to picture Eriksen moving on from Old Trafford.

Dele Alli – Everton

Once the young star of Pochettino’s Tottenham side, Dele Alli has since found himself dealing with issues away from the pitch which have hindered his football.

A spell at Besiktas did not work out for him and he now looks set to leave Everton at the end of the season.

Dele has been dealing with an injury issue all season which has meant the Toffees have not played him as Spurs have now missed out on the proposed £10m clause in their deal.

Heung-min Son – Tottenham Hotspur

After Postecoglou’s arrival, Heung-min Son was quickly made the Spurs captain following Lloris’ time as the number one coming to an end.

The South Korean has been a huge part of the Tottenham starting XI since he joined back in 2015 and continues to score at an impressive level.

His form may have dipped in recent weeks, but the 31-year-old has played a lot of football this season with a lot of international games seeing him play on the other side of the world.

The Spurs captain has now become the club’s fifth-highest goalscorer with over 400 appearances to his name.

Lucas Moura – Sao Paulo

What a place to end this list. The man who single-handedly secured Tottenham’s spot in the Champions League final with his sensational hat-trick.

Lucas Moura’s time at Hotspur Way came to an end last summer following the conclusion of his contract.

Having ended his time with a stunning solo-goal away to Leeds United, he returned to his hometown in Brazil.

Since leaving, Moura helped Sao Paulo on to lift the Brazilian Cup in his short time away from north London.
