SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — A former San Mateo County sheriff’s deputy has been convicted of molesting a girl for six years, beginning when she was 11.

The San Jose Mercury News says Galen Underwood was convicted Friday of nine child molestation charges, including aggravated sexual assault. The jury in Santa Clara County rejected a dozen other charges.

Underwood is facing 40 years to life behind bars.

Prosecutors say the 42-year-old Gilroy resident secretly molested a relative while maintaining a virtually spotless work record.

The molestation came to light two years ago when the girl reported the abuse to a school guidance counselor. Underwood was fired last year.
