Released in the US as Seaside Swingers, this light and breezy film – shot in widescreen and Technicolor – was a vehicle for 60s pop stars, John Leyton, Mike Sarne and Freddie and The Dreamers.
A bizarre collection of seven kids take summer jobs at a seaside holiday camp (filming took place at Butlin’s in Clacton, Essex) and work together to win a televised talent competition. By some cinematic miracle, the bunch takes the top prize.
Sarne (cast as Tim, a young aristocrat-about-town) vies with working-class Gerry (John Leyton) for the attention of the no less high-born Christina Barrington de Witt (Grazina Frame, pictured at right).
The likeable cast also includes Liz Fraser, Richard O Sullivan, Ron Moody, Nicholas Parsons, Michael Ripper and the beautiful Baker twins, Jennifer and Susan.
Includes the pop tunes All I Want Is You, A Girl Needs a Boy, Second Time Around, Indubitably Me, Love Me Please, Now Ain’t That Somethin’ Cor Blimey, Romeo Jones, and What’s Cookin’?
Photographed by Nicolas Roeg, whose credits include several popular films of the 1960s and whose directing talent was revealed in some early 1970’s films.
