What's the deal with David E. Martin, PhD's speech at the European Parliament International Covid Summit claiming US 'intentionally released Covid virus in Wuhan'?

The speech makes various arguments suggesting US companies (mainly Pfizer) were behind Covid.

The whole narrative seems a to fit well with the anti-vax agenda so I am skeptical of the whole argument.

I looked for news coverage on the speech and found only a Hong Kong news site had written an article.

Googling the topic or David Martin yield very few results.
I would love to know if this guy has a history of making outlandish claims, if his arguments are sound and what the other side of the argument would be.

Desperately trying to cling to the name of the EU and EU Parliament when it didn't have anything to do with them at all. While the conference took place in a conference room in Brussels made up to look like a parliament, the actual EU Parliament meets in Strasbourg.

The EU parliament meets in Strasbourg and Brussels. It's a weird historical political compromise that costs 100 million euro each year as they shuttle between the two locations .
You are right that officially, the parliament is seated in Strasbourg, where it meets 12 times a year. However, most other meetings are in Brussels, and these days there are far more extra meetings than normal ones That said, the meeting is not in the main parliament room, which looks like this.

Hi, outside of the context of this original post. I am Belgian. Strasbourg is the seat of the European Parliament, but most Parliamentary Committee activity takes place in Brussels, while its General Secretariat is based in Luxembourg.

Try this link for more info. He is an academic who can produce a really good argument for debate mixing actual real facts with assumptions and his own conclusions. Maybe he is correct on many points but for a professional advising on risk management there is always one question I ask.
If he is correct, was the risk realized really worth the benefits to the companies and governments he suggests are responsible for the covid pandemic and responses to the pandemic
It just seems improbable that the benefits from such an argument or conversation for the companies he referenced in the speech were worth almost bankrupting countries and causing the deaths of millions. All for profit and power.

I've searched for his academic origins. There are a number of academics of various specialities named David Martin. The closest I can find is that he produced a PhD Thesis: "Clinical Interpretation of Skeletal Motion During Instrumented Knee Arthrometry" 1995, David Earl Martin, while research assistant professor in the Department of Radiology at the Health Sciences Center, University of Virginia.

If those claims were transparent & fact based checking would result in an evaluation of True. These types of claims are regularly researched and marked Misleading or False. Then if you read the linked article it points out that any claim that it was a European Parliament organized or official event is false or misleading. Almost everything about the sponsorship, origin, attendance, etc is false.
It also pointed out something interesting- there wasn't a ICS1 or ICS2. Why did they jump to ICS3? Really look like they're trying to mask as the real and official Global COVID-19 Summit.

-The event was held in a room in the EU parliament, but it was not an official or EU sanctioned event, it was a meeting of Covid 19 skeptics. The event doesn’t appear in the list of official events on the European Parliament website.
-Martin’s 21-minute speech was only the beginning of a nine-hour event called “International COVID-19 Summit III” held in a room of the European Parliament in Brussels on 3 May 2023.
-Basically, Martin's claim is that Covid 19 or what he calls "coronavirus" was developed on purpose (through experiments on humans) to force the world into buying the Covid vaccine manufacturing technology (ie. a get rich quick scheme)
-reality check - Coronavirus research goes back to the 1930's (1936 to be exact) when medical doctors found that these viruses could cause colds - both in animals and people, and that some were worse or more deadly than others
-Martin’s claim that these viruses were immediately identified as a model (to weaponize or make profit from) is untrue because, at that time, scientists didn’t know that coronaviruses belonged to the same family and it wasn't until 1968 after the invention of the electron microscope that this was discovered through observation.

-The way Martin speaks suggests that he doesn't know that there is more than one type of coronavirus (he refers to this as one virus) nor does he understand that viruses can spread naturally between different species (it's called zoonotic transfer)
-effective vaccines against coronaviruses were available years before the COVID-19 pandemic for several conditions that commonly affect pets and livestock.
-The patent applications that Martin talks about are very old and were for animal diseases and have no relationship with Covid 19
-For some coronaviruses, however, it is very hard to create a vaccine because they mutate really fast - this was the case with Covid 19

The substance of Martin’s allegations being that the research was done at American university for coronavirus gain of function research was also put forward previously by Dr Jeffery Sachs, chairman of Lancet’s covid19 commission on March 2023, to Congress. There are documented grant proposals of gain of function on coronavirus on the spike protein to insert an amino acid sequence known as the furin cleavage site, to improve infectivity, on viruses that the wild strains do not possess.
