Final Cut now supports external storage, but the iOS/iPadOS Files app still has no way to manually eject drives. The only way to do so safely right now is to turn off the device completely before unplugging

Genuine question: is manually ejecting drives still necessary in modern times with usb-c?

Edited

You’re generally safe as long as no read/writing is occurring, but that’s always been the case. I wouldn’t trust it with a drive I’m using to work on for an important project (as is intended with this Final Cut update)

I had a USB drive become unreadable just a few weeks ago after using it to transfer roms to Delta, luckily nothing crucial was on it so I just reformatted

Tbh, in 2024, anything important to me goes on cloud storage, not usb drives. I agree with the need for a safe eject option, though, because loss of data is almost never good.

You upload all your raw footage to the cloud? For some projects that’s just not realistic.

A typical shoot for me is at the very least 100gb of footage. I’d love to be able to cut together a storyboard of shots on my iPad for clients while on set but that’s just not feasible with how it’s currently set up. So I’ll continue to use a MacBook until that happens.

ejecting is only necessary when the OS is doing some buffering magic in the background and your file system doesn't support rollback, i'd just assume iPadOS isn't doing that which makes it a non issue.

Heck, even windows has this feature disabled by default nowadays because it's just not very useful.

u/alex2003super avatar

Interestingly, macOS does use buffered writing to filesystems, even external ones.

u/literallyarandomname avatar

It can also be the drive. Lots of SSDs have a RAM buffer on them, which is lost when you unpower the drive before it can write it all to the flash cells.

More replies

No it isn’t.

More replies

Just unplug it, it will be fine, this isn’t 2003 anymore.

u/henrydavidthoreauawy avatar

Is that true? I always thought that to be the case with Windows, but macOS still makes you eject. I thought it was a difference in the way they handle data writing. Which is a huge pain when my Mac goes to sleep with a drive plugged in, and then I get the “next time, eject” message.

They don’t make you eject, there is an eject option for legacy users

u/nicuramar avatar

Windows makes you eject the same. Well, neither make you.

And ExFAT is still not journaled. Writing large files to USB is still an async operation, and ejecting ensures the write cache is flushed before you kill power to it.

Even if you turn it off, you have to remember to park the heads first.

Ridiculous… doesent Apple know this themselves because they edit on iPad too?😭 and doesent it inconvenience them the same way it does to us?? Yet they keep it the same way?

Final Cut Pro for ‌iPad‌ 2 will be available this spring as a free update for existing users, with new users able to purchase it for $4.99 per month or $49 per year. Final Cut Camera will come later in the spring as well, and Final Cut Pro for Mac 10.8 will be available as a free update for existing users.

So, the new features are not released yet, contrary to all the headlines.

Headlines should say announced, not debuted.

Is this better than DaVinci Resolve?

You tell me. All subjective

Depends on what video formats you’re using and if you also edit on a Mac.

Depends if you value touch first or comprehensive colour grading more.

Depends if you want a one off purchase or a subscription.

Depends if you think Apple cares more about post production or Blackmagic.

DaVinci Resolve Studio is a one off purchase, either through the App Store or directly from Blackmagic Design. There is also a free version, with limited functionality, but worth it for many enthusiasts.

I had been using Final Cut Pro for professional video editing for about four years, figured it did everything I needed. Last year, I bought Resolve because I couldn't achieve a certain task in FC and ever since then I felt like a was released from chains. The amount of things I can do in Resolve and MUCH easily is astounding. The only thing that sucks is it doesn't support Prores, so I have to export to image sequences to ensure the highest quality possible. But it's SO much worth it. I love the Fusion editing tab, I love the color corrections tab. I love it's support for DCP. Trust me, man. It's so much worth it.

What doesn’t support pro res? Resolve? Yes it does.

u/MolestationStation69 avatar
  • I switched to Windows

u/Subylovin avatar

Ahhh yeah but hey you got dnxhr!

u/henrydavidthoreauawy avatar

Resolve doesn’t support ProRes on Windows? That surprises me, Premiere does. ProRes is so prevalent in video production, that would be a dealbreaker for many workflows.

Dude I used to use Final Cut Studio to edit and the jump to Final Cut Pro X was such a huge downgrade, they basically made their pro software more like iMovie.

I think they were predicting YouTube would be huge, and they wanted people using FCP for that, and they were right but they didn’t think about how the word of mouth that FCP is now bad would affect new people figuring out what software they wanted to learn.

u/AkhlysShallRise avatar

Not to discredit your experience, but I just wanted to share a different perspective.

I've been using FCP for video editing for 4 years as well. Started off creating videos as a side gig, but in the last year I've been doing it full-time.

Like you, I went to Resolve because I needed something that FCP didn't have and boy did I not enjoy using Resolve for editing.

While I understand it always takes time to adjust to new tools, using Resolve was almost like trying to fly a spaceship! The preferences alone were insane! Yes yes, it has TONS of features that FCP doesn't have natively, and many of those features might be useful or even necessary for certain professionals in the video industry, but that's the thing, I'm not those people.

I mostly cut videos and create motion graphics for educational videos and using Resolve feels so much slower for doing same things due to a lack of hover-skimming, magnetic timeline (yes I think it's superior), and powerful 3rd party plugins.

I don't do much color grading and I can definitely see Resolve being a way better tool for that :) Whenever I need more extensive color grading tools in FCP, ColorFinale has it covered!

Also, FCP has the incredible CommandPost that allows users to access parameters, effects, titles, shortcuts and even clipboard items much more efficiently via a variety of control surfaces including MIDI. It's a workflow game-changer.

u/3bodprobs avatar

Just to add, CommandPost supports davinci with deeper support coming soon.

Huh? Even the free version supports prores footage and can render prores just fine too.

Resolve all the way. Resolve is like if Apple for a sensible redesign of Final Cut 7, incorporating modern tech without forcing new workflows on users. BlackMagics experience in the industry helped bundles.

Premiere is all about just keeping things the same. Resolve is about updating and incorporating things sensibly. And it’s free. Final Cut X is just iMovie on steroids. I use it professionally and have never bumped into the pay wall.

u/Obvious_Librarian_97 avatar

Yes, it’s free

u/TechSudz avatar

No. But it’s much more simple and intuitive which should count for something.

Ugggghhhhhhhhh FINDER FOR IOS AND IPAD PLEASE YOU MADE THE STAGEDIRECTOR FOR THE LOVE OF STEVE

So much innovation and brave to finally be able to work directly on the external storage.

u/fire2day avatar

Serious question: Why does it matter to you when a company brings a feature to their product? Why can’t you just think (to yourself) “That’s nice. I’m happy for the people who use that product”?

A big part of their Reddit persona is hating on Apple and Apple users. Ignore them.

Because it’s been unusable to edit 100s of gigs of footage between a mac and a iPad

u/fire2day avatar

That's not even an answer to the question I asked.

Yes it is. I tried using it and it was impossible without external storage support
