“Who Better?”: Furiosa’s Mad Max Cameo Actor Revealed By Director

Summary

  • Edgar Wright is in awe of George Miller's Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, saying he's still reeling at the intricate and immersive experience.
  • Furiosa is not just a chase movie, but a revenge epic reminiscent of Ben-Hur, with the sweetest vengeance pay off.
  • The cast shines according to Wright, with Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, and Anya Taylor-Joy lighting up the screen.

Edgar Wright reviews George Miller's Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, expressing awe and envy in a lengthy social media post. The saga of desert warrior Mad Max began way back in 1979, with Mel Gibson giving an iconic lead performance, then continued through the trilogy-capper Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. In 2015, director Miller belatedly revisited his post-apocalyptic universe, casting Charlize Theron as the warrior Furiosa, alongside Tom Hardy as Max. Now Furiosa takes the driver’s seat in Miller’s long-running saga, with Anya Taylor-Joy stepping in for Theron, alongside Chris Hemsworth as the maniacal Warlord Dementus.

With the release date for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga finally about to arrive, Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver director Wright took to social media to offer his thoughts on the film, expressing his admiration for Miller's accomplishment. Check out his remarks below:

Even though I understand what it takes to make a film, I still don’t understand how Dr. George Miller does it. I was lucky enough to see ‘Furiosa’ a month ago, and I’m still reeling at how films like his exist. It’s so intricate, detailed, and immersive. The planning and love that have gone into the staging, blocking, and design are just unreal. Hats off to George and team for giving us 45 years of imaginative, visceral cinema. The movie is a feast for your eyes and ears, a full circle to the first Max adventure in 1979.

Also, the subtitle, ‘A Max Max Saga’, is not wrong as this is a revenge epic, more than a chase movie like ‘Fury Road’. The closest comparison was something like 'Ben Hur' - where a long fuse of revenge burns for years and pays off with (no spoiler) the sweetest vengeance. Filmmakers and fans will leave with their heads spinning. I felt both inspired and envious! There was a point during a midway set piece where I leant over to a friend and said, "How the f--k does he do this?”

And, of course, the cast is amazing. Chris Hemsworth has never been better, Tom Burke is a brooding rugged presence recalling the original Road Warrior himself, and as for Anya, I’m so excited and proud to see her lighting up the screen.

Way back in March 2020, literally 48 hours before the pandemic shutdown happened and the country shut down, I had dinner with George Miller in London after he watched an early cut of ‘Last Night In Soho’. He asked me if Anya would be a good choice to play young Furiosa, and I responded, ‘Do it, do it! She’s a star, get her now!’. I texted Anya that night to expect a call from George Miller, and I’m so thrilled to see the results four years later. What a ride, you will enjoy!

Could Wright Take Over The Mad Max Saga From Miller?

Chris Hemsworth as Dementus wears a crazed expression in a scene from Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Miller has been the only director ever to make a Mad Max film, having launched the series way back in 1979, and revived it in 2015 with Fury Road. Given that Miller is now 79-years-old, it’s fair to ask how much longer he can continue making action-heavy films like the Mad Max movies. It can indeed be assumed that, when Miller retires from filmmaking, the Mad Max saga ends as well.

But if Furiosa were to make a lot of money at the box office, it’s possible Warner Bros. would wish to continue making Mad Max films. Miller’s participation would seem to be obligatory, but what if the director indeed wants to hang it up after Furiosa? Another director taking on the Mad Max universe might seem unthinkable, but it was also hard to imagine anyone other than Steven Spielberg directing an Indiana Jones movie, until James Mangold did just that.

Mad Max: Fury Road is available to watch on Hulu

If Furiosa does well enough that WB wants more movies, but Miller doesn’t want to make them, Wright may be a good candidate to step into Miller’s shoes. The director has the chops to pull off a high-octane action movie, as Baby Driver proved. He also has a great rapport with Furiosa star Taylor-Joy, as their movie Last Night in Soho showed. It’s clear from his Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga remarks that he loves the universe, making Wright a strong candidate to lead the franchise into the future, if indeed it requires a new leader.
