Day of the Nightmare (1965) - Poor Barbara Crane.
Not only does her weird husband Jonathan (Cliff Fields) disappear for weeks at a time due to his commercial artist "duties," apparently he's having an affair with a woman named Doris Mays.
Adding insult to injury on the latter issue, this chick is uggggg-ly.
So how does Barbara (played by Beverly Bain) know about Doris Mays? Mays, who sports sunglasses and wears an old lady coat, starts to hunt Barbara down with a gun. Fortunately, Barbara escapes each time.
Then one day, it appears that Jonathan and Doris have it out in an apartment room and he kills Doris. It also appears that Jonathan stuffs her body in a trunk and takes it home to Barbara.
Well, to the garage, anyway, where he pushes it into a corner puts a blanket over it.
The operative word here is "appears." We don't see the alleged murder happen, and the people in the downstairs apartment who tell their story to detective Dave Harmon (John Ireland) only heard the arguing and a shot. We do, however, see Jonathan with the trunk.
This "appears" to be a simple murder mystery in which Barbara fears the worst, but for whatever crazy reason loves her husband so much she'd hide the evidence if necessary.
But there is nothing simple about this story. Oh, no. This goes in directions I'm not even about to tell you, because it would ruin the fun.
The story kind of ruins itself about three-quarters of the way through when all is revealed, but there is still plenty of action to keep you interested the rest of the way.
I watched this movie on Amazon Prime, and apparently there are some scenes involving kinky sex games and extraneous nudity edited out. I'd say it was just as well. This story was bizarre and grindhouse-y enough that you didn't need distractions.
