Leading By Example
The Government of Canada is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. That includes leading by example by greening its own operations.
In the National Capital Region, 80 buildings are connected to a district energy system for heating and 67 are connected for cooling, including the Parliament Buildings. The system was built between 50 and 100 years ago and uses outdated technologies. Many of its components are at the end of their service life.
The Energy Services Acquisition Program (ESAP) will modernize these plants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save money and improve safety.
Investing in more efficient technologies for heating and cooling plants in the National Capital Region will reduce costs and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
ESAP has reduced greenhouse gas emissions associated with the operation of the district energy system (DES) by over 30% since 2005 and this modernization project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a total of 63% once it is completed in 2025.
