Nurse on Wheels is a charming film that is clearly riding on the coattails of the more well known Carry On series. I've always had a soft spot for this era of British comedy but had missed Nurse on Wheels. Having now watched it, it does share a lot in common with the more well known film Carry On Nurse, including some of the same cast, the same director and same writer. While Nurse on Wheels isn't quite on the same level as Carry On Nurse, I still enjoyed it a great deal.

Despite my affection for this era and genre of British comedy, I couldn't actual recall having ever watched this before. By the final reel which features a subplot starring Jim Dale as the husband who parks his caravan in a farmer's field to effectively squat there whilst his wife (Amanda Reiss) reaches the final stages of her pregnancy I had vague recollections from my childhood, but nothing more.

With the exception of unwanted advances played off as a joke, this is a charming a little film with a few funny moments. And I really liked the feistiness of Joanna Jones (Juliet Mills).

From the same group of people (writer, producer, director, even composer) that brought you the Carry On films comes this utterly insipid comedy about a district nurse taking first first job, out in the country.
Adapted from a novel, this takes it's cues more from the Doctor series than it does from the Carry Ons and has more in common with something like All Creatures Great and Small than it does Carry On Nurse.
The entire film is undermined by some truly awful writing which gives us a story that relies entirely upon misunderstandings for it's so call comedy and which merely results in a series of awkward interactions that are just painful to watch and fail to produce even the hint of a smile.
This is entirely inoffensive stuff, steering well clear of anything even remotely racy, with not even a hint of innuendo, although the ending (pun intended) is recycled from Carry On Nurse.

Faultless, but for the sense it is one of those films, somewhat typical you might say of 50s and 60s comedies, that simply hasn’t got a point or story to it at all.
It’s amusing and good natured, and I especially liked Joan Hickson as a bread basket and Noel Purcell’s shopkeeper, and a romantic lead’s fondness for follicle boot polish is always a bonus for entertainment.
However, it very much sets up a premise and then lets it roll as it will, and of course there isn’t much promise to the premise for it the stay the course of any film’s runtime. Is what it is
Imagine a Carry On film without the main cast, and you've got exactly this. Same writer, director and producer as the earlier, gentler Carry Ons, same group of supporting actors, just with Juliet Mills doing sterling work in the lead.
