Japan international right-back Risa Shimizu joined West Ham United in August 2022.

Prior to her move to English football, Shimizu had spent her entire professional career with Tokyo Verdy Beleza in her homeland.

A serial trophy winner with Tokyo Verdy Beleza, the defender has also enjoyed success with Japan, appearing for her country at five major tournaments.

2023/24

Scored her first WSL goal in a 3-4 home defeat by Tottenham Hotspur on 21 January 2024…Started and finished West Ham United’s opening 20 WSL matches…Started all three of the Hammers’ FA Women’s League Cup group-stage ties…Started the 1-3 Women’s FA Cup fourth-round defeat by Chelsea on 14 January 2024…Helped Japan qualify for the 2024 Women’s Olympic Tournament with a 2-1 aggregate win over North Korea in February 2024.

2022/23

Joined West Ham United on a two-year contract on 28 August 2022…Made her West Ham United debut and kept her first clean sheet in a 1-0 WSL home win over Everton on 18 September 2022…Appeared in all 22 WSL matches, making 21 starts, and kept five clean sheets as West Ham United finished eighth in the 12-team table…Started all five FA Women’s League Cup ties as the Hammers reached the semi-finals…Started the Women’s FA Cup fourth-round penalty shootout defeat by Aston Villa on 26 February 2023…Ended her debut season with the Hammers with 28 appearances to her name in all competitions, and eight clean sheets…Started all five ties for Japan at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in New Zealand in August 2023, scoring in a 3-1 round of 16 win over Norway to become the first Hammer to score at a Women’s World Cup finals, before being eliminated by Sweden in the quarter-finals.
