Robert Graysmith’s New York Times bestselling account of the desperate hunt for a serial killer and his own investigation of California’s unsolved Zodiac murders.

A sexual sadist, the Zodiac killer took pleasure in torture and murder. His first victims were a teenage couple, stalked and shot dead in a lovers’ lane. After another slaying, he sent his first mocking note to authorities, promising he would kill more. The official tally of his victims was six. He claimed thirty-seven dead. The real toll may have reached fifty.

Robert Graysmith was on staff at the
San Francisco Chronicle in 1969 when Zodiac first struck, triggering in the resolute reporter an unrelenting obsession with seeing the hooded killer brought to justice. In this gripping account of Zodiac’s eleven-month reign of terror, Graysmith reveals hundreds of facts previously unreleased, including the complete text of the killer’s letters.

THE GIRL IN ALFRED HITCHCOCK'S SHOWER

“[An] unsettling true-crime story."

--Library Journal

“A bizzare real-life mystery... groundbreaking... truly unique."

--Crime Time

“An ambitious work."--Library Journal

“This book has all the makings of a great noir classic…fascinating, both as true crime, as film history, and as cultural history. It’s clear the author was present in the times and researched his topics thoroughly. He manages to convey a real sense of what it was like in America in the 1960s, both in the entertainment industries of Los Angeles and Las Vegas and in more average walks of life.”--CA Reviews

“This is both a fascinating concept and intriguing read…a bizarre real-life mystery. In this groundbreaking narrative, Graysmith calls Marli's sudden disappearance into question, asking whether her end echoes that of the girl in Alfred Hitchcock's shower or if she is still alive today? Graysmith has produced a truly unique book.”--Crime Time

“[Graysmith’s] back in the true crime game with another unusual murder case. It's a rich enough story that Graysmith's book might make an interesting film in its own right.”

--Cinematical

BLACK FIRE

“With Black Fire, Robert Graysmith introduces us to a Tom Sawyer we’ve never seen before, the real one. Thoroughly researched, written with verve and a storyteller’s eye for detail and character, Graysmith sets us right down at the card table, beer I hand, and lets us listen as one of America’s most important authors gets to know the incredible true story of the actual Tom Sawyer--firefighter, adventurer, hero. Black Fire is a rollicking tale, well-told: it’s safe to say that Mr. Samuel Clemens himself would have heartily approved.”--Mike Medavoy, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Phoenix Pictures

“A worthy first telling of an unknown but gripping story, Black Fire ignites the reader’s fascination from the first page onward. The story of the real Tom Sawyer is as riveting a tale as the classic novel he inspired.”--David Zucker, president of television at Scott Free Productions and executive producer of The Good Wife

“Few nonfiction writers can match Robert Graysmith for capturing a city on the edge. Like he did in Zodiac, Graysmith paints a picture of San Francisco held siege by a mysterious criminal. I couldn’t put it down.”--Larry Karaszewski, screenwriter of Ed Wood

“Tom Sawyer was real? Who knew? Robert Graysmith, that’s who! Graysmith mined gold rush San Francisco and came up with 18 carats--a card-playing buddy of Mark Twain who tracks a serial arsonist. You can feel the heat and taste the ash on every page.”--Michael Chernuchin, Executive Producer of Law & Order

“I was Robert Graysmith’s editor for Zodiac. Black Fire shows him with his reportorial and narrative skills intact. It’s good to meet the real Tom Sawyer. I’ll keep him in mind when I read Twain to my grandchildren.”--Richard Marek, Former President and Publisher, EP Dutton

“A sizzling tale . . . [Graysmith] uncovers Mark Twain’s friendship with the real-life Sawyer--a colorful figure in the city’s early firefighting culture--and paints a detailed portrait of San Francisco, circa 1849-1866. It’s jam-packed with notable residents whose long-ago importance lingers in the city’s street names (Broderick, Brannan)--plus mustachioed hooligans and ‘The Lightkeeper,’ as arsonist as mysterious as he was destructive.”--San Francisco Bay Guardian

“The journalist delved deep into archival material to find the connection between Mark Twain and a heroic San Francisco firefighter named Tom Sawyer, who became the model for one of Twain’s most beloved characters.”--Sacramento Bee

“Mark Twain fanatics and firefighter-history buffs alike will flock to the tale of the real-life Tom Sawyer’s adventures fighting fires in the Gold Rush-era city, depicted in remarkable detail by Graysmith . . . Black Fire captures the spirit of rugged adventure so beloved in Twain’s work and so characteristic of the undaunted city built--time and time again--on the hopes of fortune- hunters.”--Booklist

“Rich . . . Lively and chock-full of eye-opening tidbits.” --Kirkus Reviews

“Packing a whirlwind of events around dizzying details of boggy, impassable streets choked with decaying refuse, characters of all manner of disrepute, throughout a booming city haphazardly constructed of highly flammable material from the east, into one of the most tumultuous periods in San Francisco’s storied history . . . the book truly shines.’--Publishers Weekly

ZODIAC MOVIE

(WARNER BROS./PARAMOUNT):

“A Mind-bending, Nonstop Mesmerizer of a Movie . . . “--Rolling Stone

“Fascinating and uncompromising. . . Zodiac holds you in its grip from start to finish.”--Newsweek

The first feature film in history filmed entirely as raw data without film, tape or video compression. On May 17, 2007 Zodiac was the official US entry at the 60th Cannes Film Festival for the Palm d Or and the first time David Fincher has been invited to appear in competition at Cannes. Zodiac received a five minute standing ovation.

"Zodiac" by Robert Graysmith has been on the best seller list for many years. Because of the release of the David Fincher 2008 movie,
it has been reprinted in paperback, together with its sequel "Zodiac Unmasked." Both works by Mr. Graysmith are well researched and written and highly recommended.

What is so special about this edition of Robert Graysmith's "Zodiac" is that it is the original and only hardcover pressing. All the other editions, including the current one with the colorful Golden Gate Bridge picture, are paperback and not ideal for the serious Zodiac researcher.

In addition, the original "Zodiac" hardcover edition has pictures which do not appear in any of the paperbacks.

One word of frustrating news about the hardback edition, which this review is based on: it is very hard-to-find. Expect to pay at least $30.00 or more for a copy. It is well worth the money. Anyone who wants to study Mr. Graysmith's "Zodiac" and "Zodiac Unmasked" should have a hardback of both titles. The latter, published in 2002, is easier to find then the former. However for a serious Zodiac researcher, having hardback copies of both editions is a must.

The text is the same as those in the paperbacks. For someone who wants something to read after viewing the Fincher movie, by all means, buy the paperback editions of "Zodiac" and "Zodiac Unmasked."
They are available through Amazon.com. In addition, Amazon.com may be your ONLY source to find the original hardback editions. Both Graysmith books are very well written, detailed and documented that the reader will find the material very intersting - perhaps even addictive for more Zodiac books. Unfortunately, there are not too many titles available, which carry my recommendation. Just key in the tag line "Zodiac" and you will find my other reviews and recommendtions on books about the Zodiac killer, all available from Amazon.com.
Zodiac Unmasked: The Identity of America's Most Elusive Serial Killer Revealed

I really couldn't put down this book. It reads like a first rate fiction book. It is horrifying to think that all the events in this book actually took place, and more terrifying still that the serial killer is still at large after over 30 years of evading the police.

The killings are gruesome, with some victims repeatedly stabbed to death, while others shot at close range with a hand gun. None of the victims are sexually molested, and they are not robbed of their personal belongings. The killer derives pleasure from killing his victims. As he later tells police in letters sent to newspapers, he kills in order to collect his victims as slaves for the next life!

There was one instant where the killer might have been caught. After the Zodiac (as the killer calls himself) shoots a taxi driver, a police car is called to the scene after the gun shot is heard. However, witnesses mistakenly reported a black man at the scene. The Zodiac is a chubby white man. When the police arrive near the scene, they see the Zodiac walking, and stop by him to ask him if he had seen a black man in the area. He says yes and points to the direction he allegedly saw a black man with a gun running. If the police would have stopped and interviewed the Zodiac more carefully, they would have seen his bloody hands. There is no telling what would have happened then. The police could have been shot dead, or maybe it could have been the other way around (there were two policemen in the car.) The Zodiac also called the police after committing some of the crimes - from phone booths adjacent to police stations!

Another chilling instant was when the Zodiac stopped a pregnant woman and her child on a road claiming that her back tire was wobbling. He volunteered to fix the tire, and while the woman watched from her side view mirror, he appeared to do just that. However, as soon as she drove off, the back tire completely came off and she had to stop. She was then kidnapped by the Zodiac and driven around for almost an hour, as if the Zodiac was looking for an ideal place to kill his victim. However, the woman together with her child manage to jump out of the car, and escape death!

Not all of Zodiac's victims died. Although some victims were repeatedly stabbed, some survived! In all, it is believed that the Zodiac might have killed about 37 people. He is still at large!

It was quite amazing how an amateur code breaker was able to break the coded letter of the Zodiac within a day and night. After the coded letter was published in a newspaper, neither the FBI nor the police were able to decipher the letter. However, an amateur man did! The FBI should have hired him!

This book will keep you reading throughout the night. It includes photos of the letters sent by the Zodiac that will send a chill up your spine. I just couldn't put this book down.

AHHHHHHHHHH
WHO IS THE ZODIAC?

Great book. It will always be a classic work. Yes, the subject matter is compelling - but Graysmith is interesting himself. Really has a way of putting this together to make one complete, thrilling piece.

Since I wrote a lousy short review about Zodiac Unmasked, in all fairness, I thought I'd say that I personally thought this book ZODIAC is excellent. Its an easier read than Zodiac Unmasked. I bought it when it first came out and have read it 5 times. Yes, it scared me. I have been interested in the Z since I was a teen living in Marin county CA at the time of the killings. Last year my step son asked if he could borrow this book. I said NO WAY! This copy doesn't leave my house. If you are new to the Zodiac, read this book. If you want to be frightened, read this book. Every time I go through Vallejo, I think of the Z. As a teen he invaded my thoughts. My friends and I were afraid of him and the subject came up a lot. Once, in 1971, I was riding my horse with a friend and we saw someone in a white, or light-color car acting totally nuts. Who do you think we thought of? For those of us who have been obsessed and haunted by the Z, this book meets our desires.

This I think along with the sequel the best books you can read on the Zodiac killer. Robert Graysmith I believe figured out who Zodiac was and knows more about this case than anyone else. You spent a big part of his life obsessed and hunting for the truth. These books are incredible!

The book came in perfect condition. The print quality was good. It took longer than expected to arrive but overall matched my expectation. It gives a detailed account and even explains methods used in the investigation of the zodiac killings with illustrations, maps, police sketches, and also contains reproductions of the original zodiac letters.
I ordered the mass media paperback!
