DarkSky ended service, what's a similar weather app/site for PC/desktop?
I've been using Dark Sky for nearly 10 years now, even long ago when it was called "forecast.io", but as of January 1st 2023, the site is just a message saying that the Dark Sky functionality has been integrated into Apple's default weather app.
That's cool and all, but I don't have any iOS devices so I can't use it anymore.
The main thing I liked about Dark Sky is that it was simple and minimalist, it just showed current weather, radar, and 7-day forecast all on one page, without a million links and images and ads and other crap. Are there any weather sites like that, which can be viewed from a Windows PC web browser?
To fill the void of the darksky shutdown, I've recently assembled and put online this alternative: https://merrysky.net/forecast/nyc/us
It's a responsive layout and should fit most screen sizes. No need for an app but you can add it as an home icon, see instructions in the FAQ
It's backed by the pirateweather.net API
I like this a lot! It's very similar to DarkSky's hour-by-hour layout. (Like Relative_Fudge_5112, I'm viewing this on a laptop (Mac in my case) using a browser.)
Unfathomably based.
Although for some reason it seems to default to Celsius every time I visit the site.
Currently, it will remember it for your current session and for follow up searches but it does not save it in preferences like local storage. I will send a fix for that shortly!
This is fuckin perfect. I love it
Thank you so much for this!
Thanks so much. Looks great. On my homescreen it goes.
Excellent replacement for the DarkSky website, well done.
This is very cool! Kudos
Pretty good, thank you. Only thing missing is sunrise/sunset which I used frequently on darksky.
Hi u/fionic
Sunrise and sunset were added today as well as tons of other stuff. Check out the post on mastodon that goes through this last update https://mstdn.social/@merrysky/109762730352343796

I've added dark mode support. Please tell me if you like it
Awesome. Bookmarked and my new go to. Can’t wait to see it grow.
Love it. Upvotes. Anywhere I can keep tabs on the development of this?
You are a saint.
😇
This is awesome. Any chance you can have the radar linked at all to windy.com?
Man this is great, really achieves what made darksky so good
I just found this and I absolutely love the rain forecast part of it. I don't know why, but a simple thing that just shows when it is raining and if it is light, heavy, whatever, seems to be missing from so many weather apps. Awesome job on that.
The one thing from DarkSky I don't see here that I really liked was the bar-chart style temperature forecast. Made it really easy to visually see how the temperature was looking of the next week. The line graph isn't bad, but it's just not as easy to read because it's putting the full week into that one chart.
Hi u/justafaceaccount with the new timeline configuration options, you can toggle temperature to get a weekly glance. Check out the post on mastodon that goes through this last update https://mstdn.social/@merrysky/109762730352343796
Amazing. Thank you!
Not as #aesthetic as Dark Sky but you crammed a whole lot more information on a single page-- Thank you!!
This is awesome, thanks so much. I had no idea DarkSky shut down until just now and this perfectly fills the void.
This app is a great alternative. Thanks for the post.
weather.gov
It’s good but you have to kinda click through a lot
I'm pretty happy with MyRadar app. Yes, a few ads but nothing intrusive.
I have an iPad and I can't use it anymore. You'll need an iphone or ipad capable of running iOS 16. My iPad had no problems running dark sky, but suddenly, it's no longer advanced enough to run apple's weather app.
They've yanked it from the App Store. My iPhone and iPad are both on iOS / iPadOS 16.2. Alas, poor Yorick, I knew it well.
Wunderground has great charts and radar although they are split into different pages on web.

Weather on Apple I use now DS has gone. Nearly as good….
Forecast.io was the best.
