It may lack the bells and whistles that normally grace his albums, but fans should be more than happy to trade in roaring climaxes for mini-epiphanies this time around.

Some will dismiss Dawn for being too simple and too obvious and possibly too depressing, but that’s where the album’s magic lies. Dawn charms you despite its dark feel, convincing the listener to sit a spell and be captivated by the intricacies of a story that we’ve all lived out. It’s a near masterpiece, and finds one of the better songwriters of the past decade back at top form, creating a poignant work with ease.

Some people say
"Arise! Arise! Arise! Live friend live!"
I say: "Die."
I say: "Shade yourself."
I say: "Shine what precious light you have into caves
And when it dies out stay in there"
I say "find life where you foolishly saw graves."
Some people say to "Try and try and try!
Fight and save yourself!"
I say: "Give"
I say "Send them off."
I say "Shed whatever husk if you are ripe

"I saw fireworks many miles away but didn't hear them, and I felt a longing, a childish melancholy, and then I went to sleep and the aching was buried, dreaming, aging, reaching for an idea of somewhere other than this place that could fold me in clouded yearning for nowhere actually reachable. And then when I was twenty-four, I followed this ache to an arctic Norwegian cabin where I said "fuck the world" in a finally satisfying way."

this album is pure magic for me. as soon as the first strings are plucked on it wasnt the hunting, all my worries or whatever i was thinking about at that time just melt away as i get transported into the music. i find this album very nostalgic, when i was travelling through italy and hiking through the gorgeous mountains years back i would always have this playing and it truly connected me with nature. and even when we were snowed in here in canada, this album really put me in a certain mood. ... read more

As I explore the world of Phil Elverum, I'm starting to realize that I definitely prefer his Mount Eerie era to his work with The Microphones. While I love the instrumental exploration that The Microphones offer, I feel like Phil hadn't reached his full potential as a song writer until he moved on to Mount Eerie, with this album serving as probably the most compelling evidence of that feeling. Maybe the best singer songwriter style album ever made, and definitely the best that I've heard.
