Pat Cummins has provided an update on Travis Head, saying that the opener is back in Australia ahead of the clash against India.

Head's participation in the ODI World Cup 2023 has been significantly impacted due to a fractured hand.

Head sustained this injury during an ODI series against South Africa last month. The injury was severe enough to rule him out of at least the first half of the World Cup. Despite this setback, the Australian team decided to include him in their 15-member squad, hoping for his speedy recovery.

The key date for assessing Head's recovery is October 12, 2023, coinciding with Australia’s second game against South Africa in Lucknow. On this day, medical staff will evaluate the healing progress of his hand, which was struck by Proteas pace bowler Gerald Coetzee. If the scans and tests show positive results, Head might continue to be part of Australia's plans for the World Cup. Otherwise, he would likely be unavailable until the tournament is nearly over.

Speaking after winning the toss in Chennai, Cummins opted to bat first and said that the team is in a good spot at the moment after their warm-up games. The Aussie skipper suggested that Head is back in Adelaide at the moment.

Cummins also revealed that Sean Abbott, Marcus Stoinis and Josh Inglis will be missing out on the clash in Chepauk.

"We are going to bat. Looks like a good wicket. Suns out. It looks like a good afternoon to bat. We are in a really good spot. We got a good balance, got some game time to the guys, looking fresh. Travis Head is on the couch in Adelaide. Seanny[Sean] Abbott, Marcus Stoinis not playing and Josh Inglis misses out," said Cummins.
