it was already difficult to see these educators’ hardships being realistically portrayed onscreen, even harder, having my viewing experience with someone who has very baluktot views towards everything. it was pointless to even argue with that person. instead of acknowledging the government’s mistreatment and underpayment towards educators, they said that it was mila’s decisions of joining the hunger strike that led her to a life that ended her up homeless on the streets.
“mas mabuti pa sana eh kung sumunod nalang siya sa patakaran at least may kinikita pa siya kahit konti” 😭 literally missing the point of this film and what…
"If you feel doubtful and skeptical / Now is the time to rise up and make progress. / But remain aware and critical / Because this struggle may never end."
Major, major film, the closest I've seen a Filipino film get to Cassavetes, where, rather than wearing their emotions on their sleeves, Mila is constantly taking detours, as scenes play out in unexpected ways, characters make irrational decisions, nothing is explained to us, it’s confident enough to know it *doesn’t* have the answers, life is messy, etc. (One example of many: Mila has an encounter with her mother very late in the film, and, after summoning up all her courage, asks her mother a very Important Question. And from the…
It took me weeks to finish this bec i couldn't take watching Piolo for 5 minutes. I'm glad i was able to finish it dahil luhaan ako ngayon lol. Haaay. Teachers deserve better than be an excuse for overpriced laptops.
I'm saying this not just because I'm a Kaye Abad truther, but hustisya for Winona at sa mga kagaya nya.
To think na ang pelikulang ito ay mula sa 22 years ago and we're still facing almost the same issues is sickening. Jusko talaga this country.
Typical Filipino mainstream cinema: Terribly cheesy story and staging based on the real person Anita Pamintuan. Here the main protagonist is called Mila. She is a teacher and advocates for the rights of teachers who were (are?) paid very poorly. There is a strike and then there is even a hunger strike. She loses her job and has to find another way to get by. She moves to the apparently bad neighborhood of Ermita, to live with prostitutes and the poor. It becomes clear that she is some kind of angel and helps everyone. She is a moral authority and constantly tries to improve her depraved surroundings.
Local problem topics are handled clumsily, silly and superficially: homosexual teachers, alcoholism, drug…
also features the most perfect use of awit ng petiburges in a movie. ang husay husay. pinakamataas na pagpupugay.
This movie is truly heartbreaking, especially since it's based on a true story that's still unfolding in my country. It's devastating... When will we be free from all these problems? Justice is needed for Anita and for all the teachers who are bravely fighting and enduring hardships.
This is what Mila's mother tells her in the film. It's the sad truth though in the Philippines. "Teaching is one of the noblest professions," Maricel Soriano said in an article before, "but I wonder why teachers here are so oppressed. Overworked sila, but underpaid."
A melodramatic take on the plight of teachers in the country, Joel Lamangan's "Mila" is a fictionalized account of the true story of Anita Pamintuan Escaño, a teacher who died in 1992 after she was fired for joining a hunger strike. She was ages 42 at that time. She ended up in Plaza Ferguzon in Manila where…
the stories of every character in this film stayed with me throughout the years.
