As to the quality of this 3D blu-ray, it's topnotch. There's fine detail in the additive 2K rendering, crisp resolution between items, excellent depth of field into the screen, and appropriate protrusions out of the screen into the room, surrounding the viewers. Seen projected in 3D onto a large wall screen (mine being 120"), viewed up close, with full surround sound turned up, it's like being INSIDE the movie (not just watching it from outside, as is the case with HD or UHD).
As to the enhancement value to the movie's plot: Cameron moves us from a rich jungle environment into a lavish island/ocean scenario. The 3D rendering of waves, seashores, into the ocean and beneath reaches out and sucks you in! As in Cameron's iconic Titanic, the alien aspects (to us air-breathing mammals) of this watery world are nothing less than stunning. This goes double for the mechanical, battle scenes. Truly, being inundated by waves pouring out of the screen or surrounded by brilliantly colored alien sea-critters or ducking from zooming submersibles is alone worthy purchasing the 3D blu-ray!
As to my personal experience, my advice to people who have the necessary equipment is to purchase both the 4K disc and the 3D blu-ray version. This wondrous, uniquely beautiful Sci-Fi epic saga should be savored in all its renderings, from the 3-dimensional to the most detailed. The first thing I did before viewing the 3D of "The Way of Water" was to go back and watch yet again my 3D of the first Avatar. It was even better than I remembered! I'm sure I'll do the same with this first sequel, watching it several times over the coming years.
I pre-ordered the 3D and 4K versions the very first day they were available and eagerly awaited their arrival for months, then viewed them immediately. I was not disappointed. The storyline of course has similar elements to the first blockbuster, plus continuing characters. But Cameron and his collaborators kick it up to a whole new level. Just as 3D adds a whole new dimension to the experience, "The Way of Water" adds a whole new reality---a whole new and different world!---to the original. Further underlying the spectacle and special effects is the family aspects, which greatly enriches and broadens the emotional impact from the first movie. I can't wait for the next installment to see what new, amazing things Cameron adds on top of the existing, rich brew! To all those involved in any way in making and distributing this incredible 3D Sci-Fi high-adventure I don't just say "thank you," I say BRAVO!
I will start off by saying this film is visually stunning, much like the 1st. The sound design is also one another level.... that being said there are issues.
So much time is just wasted re-explaining the 1st movie or concepts we already seen Jake do in the 1st film. It really makes this film drag out at certain points. Then there are seriously head scratching moments in the story. Case in point - Jake flees with his family to the Water Tribe to hide from the Human's hunting him. He tells the tribe exactly why he is there... they accept him. Later on the Sky People attack and the Tribal Leaders are somehow mad at Jake for bringing the Sky People/War to them..... but he told them exactly why he wanted to hide in their village.... it makes them look dumb.
Then in another head scratching moment they have this long drawn out story time about how they do not kill no matter what. Sky people show up and hunt some whales.... tribe "LETS GO TO WAR AND KILLLLLLL" .... hold up? Didn't you stop the story dead for like 20 minutes telling us this isn't your way?
There is another overlooked element...... water/air. The movie cares/forgets about breathing when the story needs it to and characters who should know about all this swim past masks with air.... which isn't ideal for their situation but they can breath it to survive.
Story:
Well, Humans are back, why? Because they want to colonize Pandora and Earth is dying (again). Humans establish a forward base/city and use drones to start building new habitats on world. Jake leads a resistance to their efforts in an attempt to stop the inevitable. In response the company sends hunters after Jake to stop the attacks. Jake, now a family man decides to take his family and flee.
Jake arrives at Water World and begins his life anew. Grace's daughter has a medical episode resulting in a call for help from Jakes old friends. This action leads to the Company detecting a radar return on the chopper they used to fly equipment to Jake and the hunters have an idea where to start looking.
In a nod to Vietnam the Hunters start nonsensically terrorizing locals and burning their homes..... because generic evil. Then they figure out that hunting whales near the water tribes will flush out Jake. We get this super prolonged explanation on how to hunt/harvest whales for no reason other than to show off CGI and waste time. What's comical is the story says that the jar of goo stops human ageing and each jar is worth 80million and "Pays for the whole operations"...... 80mil for eternal life? That seems a bit low.....
Anyway, this event enrages all the tribes and flushes out Jake and we have our final battle on the boat. Stuff happens, people defeated, and we get a really touching ending. Not gonna lie, it got me in the feels.
So, this film is following the basic concept of European Settlers colonizing the Western World..... There is a meta story happening in the background... but the majority of the story is following the Na'vi around and viewing it from their perspective..... which is .... okay, but it's very simple and basic.
There are 3 more movies in the works if Disney doesn't go bankrupt so hopefully at some point in time we will get to explore more of the Human side of the house.... Mainly because this series is set in the Aliens universe and somewhere out there are some motivated Colonel Marines!
