Duke Falls to No. 1 Notre Dame in ACC Championship Final

CHARLOTTE, N.C.— Top-ranked Notre Dame jumped out to an early lead en route to a 16-6 win over the No. 6 Blue Devils to capture the 2024 ACC Men's Lacrosse Championship title Sunday afternoon at American Legion Memorial Stadium.

The Fighting Irish (12-1) used a fast start and outstanding goaltending from Liam Entenmann to take home the trophy. Representing Duke on the ACC Championship All-Tournament Team was Kenny Brower, Andrew McAdorey, Brennan O'Neill and Dyson Williams.

How it Happened
  • Notre Dame jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Blue Devils got on the board with a Dyson Williams strike with nine seconds left in the period. The Fighting Irish were efficient in the opening quarter with five goals on nine shots, while Duke fired off seven shots.
  • The Irish tacked on two more goals early in the second quarter before Duke's defense put the clamps on Notre Dame for the next seven minutes. Rookie goaltender Patrick Jameison made four saves in that stretch for the Blue Devils.
  • Freshman Benn Johnston put Duke on the board again at the 4:30 mark to make it a 7-2 game.
  • Notre Dame's scoreless stretch ended at 9:26 with a goal from Devon McLane to send the Irish into halftime with an 8-2 lead.
  • Duke came out strong in the third quarter, winning the opening faceoff and forcing a pair of Irish turnovers early in the stanza. Brennan O'Neill cut the lead to five with his 202nd career goal and just over two minutes later Tyler Carpenter scored from distance to bring it to an 8-4 game. O'Neill's goal was the 300th point of his career.
  • Notre Dame closed the third quarter on a 3-1 run for an 11-5 advantage with 15 minutes left. Duke struck back with a Williams goal nine seconds into the fourth period before the Irish answered with two markers for the seven-goal lead with 12:26 to play in the fourth.
  •  The Fighting Irish held Duke to four shots in the final period and to just 29 for the game. Entenmann, the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, had 12 saves. Jameison had seven saves for Duke and Cal Girard finished his afternoon at the faceoff dot 8-of-21 with four ground balls.
Notes
  • Dyson Williams registered his 200th career goal to become the fourth Blue Devil and ninth player in NCAA history to reach the milestone. He joins Justin Guterding, Zack Greer, and Brennan O'Neill.
  • Williams finished his game with two goals to give him 50 for the season. It marks the 19th time in program history a Blue Devil has scored 50 goals in a season. He is the sixth Blue Devil to have at least 50 goals in a season twice in his career.
  • O'Neill finished the game with one goal to give him 300 points for his career. He is the fourth Blue Devils to reach the benchmark and the 22nd player in NCAA Division I history to hit 300.
  • O'Neill also extended his scoring streak to 45 games. He has 138 goals in that stretch dating back to the 2022 season.
  • Duke is now 7-9 in ACC Championship finals and 2-4 in ACC postseason games against Notre Dame.
