      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The Guilty is another Americanized remake overshadowed by the original, but its premise is still sturdy enough to support a tense, well-acted thriller.

      Audience Says

Jake Gyllenhaal is great -- but not great enough to carry The Guilty through its frustratingly static story.

Wenlei Ma News.com.au Does just enough to keep you engaged but nothing more. Rated: 3/5 Nov 2, 2021 Full Review Matthew Monagle Austin Chronicle Gyllenhaal works hard to make Baylor a more conflicted character. Yet in humanizing him the film also reduces an institutional failing into an individual one. Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 15, 2021 Full Review Linda Marric The Jewish Chronicle Gyllenhaal's best performance since his phenomenal turn in Nightcrawler. The adaption itself does however fail to make a convincing argument for its existence. Rated: 3/5 Oct 8, 2021 Full Review Amy Smith InSession Film Jake Gyllenhaal continues to show that he is one of the best actors working in the industry right now, and even with the tonal issues and the blunders at the end, there is plenty of things to enjoy and to keep yourself invested for a short runtime. Rated: B Mar 1, 2024 Full Review Dallas King Flick Feast Fans of the original will feel like they have been put on hold listening to the same piece of music on a 90 minute loop but for new audiences, this is an edge-of-your-seat thriller than you won’t want to hang up on. Rated: 3/5 Nov 12, 2022 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut {Gyllenhaal's} unhinged turn that you can practically see mentally come apart at the seams. It’s one of his best. Thomas S I couldn't understand much of the dialog so I did jot know what was going on with any precision. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/25/21 Full Review Johannes S Gyllenhaal's acting is great as well as the voice acting from the cast. You just can't really follow what's happening and the office space feels confining after some time. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/20/24 Full Review Connor S Leaving your home theater/setup, you leave slightly more enlightened even after a sweat-athon from your seat edge. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/10/24 Full Review Tong W I liked how you could feel so much stress and anxiety when the story was completely told through dialogue basically. It really keeps you invested and Jake Gyllenghaal does a grreat job in this movie! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/28/24 Full Review Audience Member Powerful performance by Jake Gyllenhaal, his acting ability is 2nd to none and it’s crazy he has no Oscar… yet. Also kudos to the voice actors here, everyone was amazing. That along with this script equates to about 90 mins of anxiety inducing plot that makes you imagine everything going on, story telling at its finest. I do think it’s like 10-15 mins too long but that’s really the only problem I had.
