A Great Day Hiking and Fishing

We were guided by my son who took us on the Forest Service Road(via Globe Mountain Road and Brown Mountain Beach) to Wilson’s Creek Bridge and the ghost town of Mortimer N.C., we first stopped just over the scenic old one way bridge and trekwd down to the creek where my son and son in law tried to entice some trout left over from the delayed harvest . It was a beautiful and scenic cool mountain water flowing briskly over smooth river rocks and a great place to stop. Now on another 6 miles up the rock switchback road( 4 wheel drive ) to the head of a trail called “Hunt Fish Trail” which leads you 1 miles straight down to Hunt Fish Falls, a 50 foot beauty. The trail is described as moderate and my son and his wife took our 15 month old granddaughter down in their arms and I would say “it is all you want” in a moderate; remember you have to come back up! The area was not crowded as the drive of one hour up a rock switchback scares away most day hikers. The swimming hole at the bottom had 60 degree chilly clear water and another beautiful 20 foot spillover fall. This is truly a wilderness, with no cell service , when you have made it back up to the small parking area, treat yourself to a cold beer on the tailgate! Then on your drive out be sure to stop at Betsy’s old country store and fly shop; Friday is hot dog day! Shop and order your dogs all the way with a old school bottle of Sundrop or Nehi Orange. Bruce the owner may be there and be prepared to be engaged in a story or two! of course, say hello to Rocky the pure bred Rottweiler . You may want to check out the cabin for rent and the “trout pond”. Also learn the “ghost town history “ of Mortimer an old Cherokee summer hunting grounds and later a logging community destroyed by a flood in 1915. If you are feeling really adventurous , head up to the headwaters trail of Wilson’s Creek which is known as Rough Ridge Trail on the BRP, a popular trail that ends at 5000 feet. We completed that .06 miles up and back the next day so we went from the headwaters to the gorge . Trail is pretty easy, very rocky with awesome overlooks and spectacular views this is a “must do” trail and will take you about 90 minutes up and back.

LOVE, this mountain and am proud to call it my second home as my mom and step-dad owned Walkers Country store for around 30 years, in fact that is the front porch of the ole store.
What can I say? Go up on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday for the most enjoyment. Its so good up there that it stays congested and packed in the summer on prime times like Thurs, Fri., Sat., and of course Sunday. You will find the best of fishing, camping or just riding through. Its a dirt road so less traffic is less dirt, course I like to roll the windows down and take it all in, cant do that when you are following ten cars 5 miles up a dirt road. Get back to nature and remember...... if you pack in in, PACK IT OUT! Lets keep paradise CLEAN for us all!

Get a map. You can get lost in this place. Harper Creek falls has a great swimming hole for the summer months. Being only a short hike to it from the parking area, it does not feel "remote" here on some summer weekends. There is a steep descent down from the trail to the water. When I was there last, a rope was available to aid climbing down. If it's not still there, I would recommend going off trail a little down river from the falls and then rock-hopping up to the swimming hole.

Leaving here to venture to Huntfish Falls, Lost Cove Cliffs, or South Harper Creek Falls will take you through some great forest and waterfall areas. Beware! You can fall to your death in some of these areas. This is some of the best wilderness and primitive camping that Pisgah has to offer. There are no guardrails up to protect you from falls from cliffs or treacherous rock faces around waterfalls.

While not high in the number of vistas these trails take you to, they do deliver scenic waterways and forests. In some locations, kids are not safe to roam on their own.

Rugged. Some trails difficult for the novice. Nice visitors center. Frequented by trout fishers. Is seeing more use the past few years.

I have been going to Wilson Creek My entire life and have enjoyed it's many wonders! From tubing to camping it has been my retreat! I have been privileged to work at Betsey's Ole Country Store and Cabin Rentals this past summer. Other reviews have said this place needs cleaning and it would be helpful if everyone took out their own trash. There are numerous organizations that clean but they cannot keep up. There is a dumpster at the entrance to the forest for everyone to put their trash in so please help! The stores do have the bare necessities if you forget something and there is now a small sandwich shop at Betsey;s in the summer months. Please respect the beauty and adventure found here! Enjoy your trip and visit the stores in the area to help the local economy!

North of Morganton, in the Pisgah National Forest, start at the Brown Mountain Beach Recreation area. Gravel road follows along this great river gorge. There are many places to get out of your car and get on the river. Bring your swimsuit & towel and have a great day.

This is a Federal wilderness area that is beautiful in good weather. But make no mistake you can get in trouble when sudden rains hit and flood the creek. There is excellent trout fishing and kayaking and camping in marked areas. Just take heed this place is a wilderness that has snakes, bears, and other animals that require common sense. There is a great visitor center that tells a history of the area that includes the story of an entire town that was destroyed in a flood and an unknown number of people that lost their lives in Mortimer NC.

Wilson's Creek is amazing! It is beautiful!!! Gray trout fishing and kayaking. There isn't any camping except at Betsy's Ole Country's store. It is a nice small campground with grey clean bathroom facilities. Lots of trails to hike as well!
