Of all the appliances in your kitchen, your dishwasher is likely the busiest and hardest working. It has to take loads of dirty dishes, glassware and silverware as well as crusty cookware and utensils and return them to you clean, dry and spot-free. That's no small feat! But as long as you are loading it correctly, cleaning it regularly and using the best dishwasher detergent, a great dishwasher is well-equipped to save you the time, effort and water it takes to wash a load of dishes by hand. If your model is falling down on the job, an upgrade may be in order.

The Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care and Cleaning Lab has a steady stream of dishwashers coming in and out of the Lab for testing. In the last few years, we've tested over 40 dishwashers with more new models knocking on the door. To evaluate them, we meticulously soil plates, bowls, cups and saucers, glassware and cookware with our standard messes and make sure everything we've applied is dry and baked on. And yes, we skip the pre-rinse!

In our last category test, we spent four months (and over 374 hours) testing 17 dishwashers for cleaning, rinsing and drying performance, capacity, loading and more. Since then, we've reviewed new models for our Cleaning and Organizing Awards, and we currently have five new dishwashers waiting to be installed and tested in our Cleaning Lab. Capacity, energy consumption and ease-of-use are some of the other assessments we make on each model so we can recommend the ones we'd choose for our own kitchens.

After reviewing our recommended picks, you'll find more details about how we test dishwashers and some of the newest, most useful features to consider while shopping for one. We also address how long you can expect a dishwasher to last and how much you should expect to pay for one.

    Pros
    • Dispenses detergent automatically
    • Fingerprint-resistant stainless steel
    • Very quiet
    • Easy-to-use app
    Cons
    • Very expensive

Miele has a premium reputation for its high-quality, beautifully designed and top-performing appliances. And like the Miele vacuums, washers and dryers we've previously tested, this dishwasher upholds that tradition.

In our tests, it did an outstanding job even on our toughest messes, with all the items we loaded emerging squeaky clean and noticeably shiny. Plus, we found the controls easy to navigate and the racks easy to load and adjust. This model also features an AutoDos detergent system which works with Miele’s PowerDisk. It dispenses the precise amount of powder detergent for the cycle you've selected based on the soil level of your load and the hardness of your water. One disk contains enough detergent for up to 20 washes which means you can skip adding it for almost three weeks if you do a load a day. Though Miele detergents are also top performers, you can opt to add your own detergent, if you prefer.

Some of today's dishwashers can have cycles lasting two to three hours or more, and speedy ones can disappoint in their cleaning power. Miele's speed cycle — QuickIntenseWash — was outstanding in our testing. It cleaned and dried a very heavily soiled load in just 58 minutes. When we used it in combination with Miele's detergent tablet, it blasted through the baked-on, burned-on deposits on our casseroles and cookware.

Though it is our most expensive pick, we believe Miele dishwashers offer lots of valuable extras that will provide big payoffs in terms of saving work and energy, the two prime reasons you want a great dishwasher in the first place. Choosing a different door design, like a pocket handle, can save money, as can opting for a mid-tier model which based on our testing provides the same great cleaning results but with fewer bells and whistles.

    Pros
    • Handle, basket, filter and more protected with Microban
    • Fingerprint-resistant stainless steel front
    • Pulls in fresh air between cycles to control odors
    Cons
    • Warranty is somewhat limited
    • No cup shelves

Like washing machines, dishwashers can be messy and often stinky appliances thanks to all the dirty dishes they have to handle. And just like it found a way to zap musty washing machine odors, GE applied that same know-how to its newest dishwashers with bacteria-resistant components and fresh air and fresh water cycles.

On this GE UltraFresh model, the handles, controls, filter, flatware basket and more are all treated with Microban to help keep these high-touch areas clean and germ-free. In addition, fresh air and water circulate inside the tub between cycles to help purge the entire dishwasher of stagnant water and food odors. In our view, these problem-solving extras combined with great performance and all at a price point below $1000 are enough to qualify it as our Best Value pick.

In our tests, this GE model did a very good job on our cleaning evaluations and was quiet and easy to use. We liked the discreet but informative front display. Hard-to-wash items like water bottles and dirty forks and spoons are no match for the water jets in the top rack and beneath the flatware basket to ensure that these items emerge their cleanest.

We particularly like the extra space between the tines that's standard in all the GE brand dishwashers we test. This extra room makes it easy to load curved or deep plates, though we couldn't fit more items than our standard load and didn't find any fold-down cup shelves in the top rack like others have.

    Pros
    • Very quiet
    • Great capacity
    • Can customize bottom rack cleaning and loading
    Cons
    • Expensive
    • No child lock on the controls

Forget what you knew about loading the dishwasher. This new Bosch with PrecisionControl lets you select a light, medium or heavy wash in each quadrant of the lower rack for a more customized cycle. And with its more powerful lower spray arm, it better tackles the load you are washing. Now, you can place items where they fit best instead of where the dishwasher dictates they go and still get safe, effective cleaning. Step aside, stockpot — the glasses are coming down! While some of these adjustments can be made directly from the controls, others can be engaged through the app, which we found easy to use.

In our Cleaning Lab tests, we found this dishwasher looked, loaded, cleaned and dried like a dream and it has a great capacity. After filling it with our standard test load, we were able to fit in six extra bowls and eight extra glasses without even needing to use the upper-tier tray which also features fold-down slots for easy loading. A hidden chamber of minerals pulls in moist air, dries it and emits it back into the dishwasher as heat for better drying performance, even on plastics. We were so impressed that we honored it with our most recent Good Housekeeping Best Cleaning & Organizing Award.

Known for its quiet dishwashers, this Bosch model didn't disappoint in that department either. It's also compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Home, and additional cycles can be downloaded through the app. The only thing we can think of that it's missing is a child lock on the controls.

    Pros
    • Very quiet
    • Top tier rack holds cups, bowls and more
    • Has caddies for knives and extra utensils
    • Large flatware basket
    Cons
    • Expensive
    • Finish is not fingerprint resistant

This dishwasher from JennAir — an appliance brand known for its high-end design and luxury look — proves that you don't have to sacrifice beauty for brawn. Its sleek front has top controls and an easy-to-grab handle with a textured grip center. Peek inside and right away you'll notice some unique racks and nice extras to accommodate the oversized utensils, cutlery and prep bowls that home chefs rely on.

In our GH Cleaning Lab tests, this JennAir plowed through our dirtiest loads with ease, and at 38 dBA, was super quiet. Thankfully it has a light on the front panel to signal that it's running, otherwise, you will barely hear it. We found the dishwasher intuitive to use and easy to program, and when we selected the Precision Dry option, everything inside emerged both clean and dry.

Loading is easy, and though the top rack isn't particularly flexible compared to others we've tested, there are six very secure holders for stemware. Most unique is its high-capacity third rack that holds bowls, cocktail glasses, cups, ramekins and other small deep items to keep them from hogging space or rattling around elsewhere. There is also a removable side caddy for oddly shaped utensils like whisks and slotted spoons, but don't worry, you won't need this space for flatware because the bottom rack steps up there.

The oversized flatware basket (above) has slots of all sizes, plus two very large sections at the end to accommodate a wide variety of pieces. There's a knife holder on the left side of the bottom rack for safely cleaning sharp cutlery. Our main con is that a dishwasher at this price point doesn't have a fingerprint-resistant stainless steel front. Why not?

    Pros
    • Filter has built-in water jets for self-cleaning
    • Extra large capacity
    • Sprays water in a square pattern to better reach the corners
    • Very quiet
    Cons
    • Controls could be more responsive

Cleaning a dishwasher's filter is an important but often overlooked task. Let it go too long and you compromise cleaning. Realizing what a tedious task it is, Beko figured out a way to take it off your hands.

Beko put water jets inside the dishwasher's filter well. Brilliant! So when you want to clean it, just select the option on the control panel and it's done. Water blasts up through the filter to flush out any debris lodged there. This, combined with its CornerIntense square water spray pattern for better coverage and cleaning helped make Beko a winner in a previous Best Cleaning & Organizing Awards.

In our performance testing, it completely cleaned our charred cookware items with ease. When it came to capacity, we fit in our full 110-piece test load plus an additional nine glasses and one extra dinner plate. It's super quiet, so there's a light that shines on the floor to let you know what stage it's in — red when it's running and green when it's done. The only hiccup we could find was that the controls needed a firm touch to engage but with practice, it got easier.

    How we test dishwashers

food covered casseroles and cookware to test dishwashers

When we test dishwashers, we challenge them with dirtier loads than you would ever have at home. And, we never pre-rinse anything before loading it in. Plus we assess the capacity and flexibility of all the racks, trays and baskets and evaluate how easy each dishwasher is to use, load and program.

Prior to testing the cleaning performance of various cycles, we uniformly apply, then bake-, dry- and burn-on mac and cheese, hamburger, oatmeal, egg yolk, milk and more to cookware (pictured) and 10 five-piece settings of dishes, glassware, cups, saucers and flatware. We even "kiss" each coffee cup with lipstick, a stain that many dishwashers struggle to completely remove.

Between staining, drying and cleaning each load, we spend at least 7 hours testing just one cycle, not counting the time it takes to examine each piece once the cycle is done. We test multiple cycles on each machine, including any special options and the app if the machine works with one.

light box to examine glassware for spotting and filming

We follow the manufacturer’s loading guidelines and use the same detergent in each machine to wash our dirty loads. Post-cleaning, we look for and note water spots left after drying, and we examine and score every item for any specks of soil that remain. The glasses are checked and scored for spots and leftover film in a special lightbox (pictured). A weighted cleaning score is calculated for each cycle, and all the cycle scores are averaged to get an overall cleaning score for each dishwasher. We also assess and rate each appliance for energy efficiency and sound and note any special features, like fingerprint-resistant stainless steel fronts.

What to consider when shopping for a new dishwasher

    line break

Fortunately, you don't have to decide what size to buy. Unlike the best refrigerators or ranges, virtually all dishwashers — except for compacts and countertops — are a standard 24 inches wide and will fit into the space your current one now occupies. Here's what else to keep in mind:

✔️ Dishwasher cycles: When buying a new dishwasher, you’ll want the basics (and some bells and whistles too):

    • Auto or Smart Wash: Dishwashers now have soil sensors, so you'll see cycles called "Auto" or "Smart Wash." These cycles adjust the length of the cycle and the amount of water to better match the soil level of your loads. For a lightly soiled load, the cycle is shorter and uses less water. If the dishwasher senses a particularly dirty load, it adds time and water for better cleaning. We suggest that these sensor cycles replace "normal" as your go-to setting to get the best cleaning. Normal has become the best option for lightly soiled loads.
    • Heavy-duty is best for dishwasher-safe pots and pans.
    • Quick rinse or rinse only is ideal for when you don’t have enough items to run a full load. This cycle is being removed from some control panels as manufacturers find consumers are not using it, but some may still offer it as an option through an app.
    • Dry boosting means drier, more spot-free results, especially on glassware and plastic. It can go by a variety of names, like Turbo Dry or Extra Dry.
    • Delay start is great if you want to run the dishwasher during off-peak energy hours or in the middle of the night when water use in your household is low.
    • Sanitizing cycle kills bacteria with time and a high-heat rinse (ideal for use if someone in the house is ill). Look for dishwashers where NSF (an independent testing organization) has certified the sanitizing cycle to make sure it kills germs to the required levels to sanitize.
    • China or delicate cycles are best for fragile items.
    • Half-load cycles are for washes with just a few items placed in either the top or bottom rack.
    • Speed cycle is ideal for cleaning lightly soiled items you need in a hurry, like extra glasses during a party. Many offer cycles that clean and dry in up to one hour.

✔️ Dishwasher racks: As you’ll soon find out, not all dishwasher racks are created equal. Here are the features we recommend considering:

    • Mobility: When you are shopping, slide the racks in and out to make sure they are sturdy and roll smoothly, and check how easily they adjust.
    • Spacing: Some shelves have very narrow spacing between the tines while others provide more room for thick or curved plates. Consider if they will accommodate the items you wash most often: If there’s a platter or plate you want to be sure fits into a new dishwasher, bring it with you to the store!
    • Top-tier rack: Many dishwashers now come with three racks — the usual two and a shallow top tray that often replaces the traditional flatware basket for utensils, small bowls and other items. Using it frees up space in the bottom rack and ensures everything has enough room to get fully clean.
    • Flexibility: Racks with fold-down shelves for stacking cups or fold-down or removable tines to better accommodate large or oddly-shaped items, stemware clips and even pop-up holders for vases and decanters can mean you can fit more things in easily. These moving parts should be easy to adjust and snap securely in place to prevent movement and breakage during the cycle.

✔️ Dishwasher tub: The two most popular materials used inside the dishwasher are stainless steel and plastic. Both can be durable, but our vote here goes to stainless steel. Once reserved only for the most expensive models, stainless steel tubs are common on virtually all but the most inexpensive machines these days. Stainless steel retains heat, stays clean and lasts forever.

✔️ Dishwasher door: This decision is purely a matter of personal preference. Here's what you'll see when you hit the stores or online sites:

    • Controls can be visible so you can see the status of the cycle and the time remaining, while other models have hidden controls for a sleeker look. More models with hidden controls have front-facing lights or display the time to better help you monitor a cycle's progress and alert you when it's finished.
    • Handles on the front are more likely to match the other appliances in your kitchen like the refrigerator or range. Recessed or pocket handles are hidden and won't protrude into the kitchen space.
    • Door panels mostly come pre-finished with stainless steel, black or other standard panels but high-end models can also accommodate custom panels to match your kitchen cabinets for an invisible look.
    • The finish can be traditional stainless steel, black stainless, matte black, white or bronze tones to add warmth and variety. Whichever you select, don’t forget to ask if the door panel is fingerprint-resistant. Many brands offer it, and you’ll be glad you got it. Top-of-the-line models come ready to accept a front panel that matches your cabinet fronts for a seamless look.

✔️ Energy efficiency: All dishwashers carry Energy Guide labels, so you can compare models for how much energy they use and approximately how much they will cost you per year to run. For a dishwasher, energy use is almost entirely tied to water use. The less water it uses, the less energy it consumes. All new dishwashers use less water per cycle than those made 10 or even five years ago and can be considered efficient, especially since they have to pass federal energy efficiency standard tests. Manufacturers usually do all their required energy testing on the normal or auto cycle and calculate the cost based on an average number of cycles. So, if you do more loads than average or use other cycles, you'll likely use more water. Energy Star-certified models are even more efficient than the federal standards require. And the costs are figured on water from an electric water heater, so if your water is heated by gas your yearly cost to run the dishwasher may be less than what's shown on the guide label. Don't worry that long cycles use a lot more energy. They don't. They still use little water and the machine itself doesn't add much to the appliance's energy usage.

✔️ Loudness: Dishwashers are one of the few appliances where manufacturers disclose the decibel level of the model based on standard testing (check on the manufacturer's website if you can't find it in-store). The quietest models are around 40 dB or below.

How long should a dishwasher last?

    linebreak

Today's dishwashers have an average lifespan of about 10 years. And as long as it is installed correctly and you take care of it by loading it correctly and keeping the dishwasher clean and maintained, those 10+ years should be trouble-free and may even stretch to 15 years or more.

However, warranties exist for a reason. Sometimes things do go wrong. Most appliance manufacturers offer at least a one-year full warranty, meaning that both parts and labor are covered for any repairs within the first year. If you need repair, it's always best to use a manufacturer-authorized repair service. They have access to the correct parts and the most up-to-date information from your model's manufacturer. Using an unauthorized repair service, especially on a new machine, can be problematic and leave you without recourse if something goes wrong. At the very least, you may have to fork over the cost of another service call to reassess the situation.

After the first year of the warranty expires, some manufacturers offer limited five-year (or more) warranties on parts (not labor), like the electronic controls and racks should they be defective. Some offer lifetime warranties for the stainless steel door and tub if they should rust through. Always check the warranty terms for any model you are considering. Before the first year full warranty is up, we recommend using the appliance often and trying as many cycles and options as you can to make sure all work to your satisfaction.

How much should you expect to pay for a dishwasher?

    line break

There are dishwashers to fit every budget. You could get a very basic, bare-bones model with only a few cycles in a standard finish for about $500. What you likely won't get is a model with a wide assortment of cycles, a stainless steel interior tub, stylized controls, flexible racks, a front panel that matches your cabinets or one that's noticeably quiet. For those perks, you'll have to trade up.

While it's not necessary to go totally top-of-the-line to get good cleaning performance, spending at least $1000 to $1500 will get you solid cleaning performance along with a nice assortment of perks and maybe even Wi-Fi connectivity. At the very least, we recommend getting a stainless steel tub, all the basic cycle features — including a boosted drying option — and if possible a fingerprint-resistant door.
