There is a stuffy old fashionedness to “The Divorce of Lady X;” but the romantic sort that is more akin to stumbling on your grandmother’s honeymoon photos than sorting through her teacup collection.
Directed by Tim Wheelan, who began his career with Harold Lloyd silents including “Safety Last,” “Lady X” is as meticulous in composition as it is filled with beauty. Wheelan arranges his flirtatious leads in Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon with an art nouveau splendor of multi-hued youth and beauty.
“Lady X” is a mistaken identity comedic romance. Olivier and Oberon star as a headstrong lawyer and heiress, respectively. Confusion abounds after she spends a chaste night in his hotel room, but leaves before revealing her true name.…
am appalled by the criterion channel's judgemental little blurb for this, where it calls the fact that it was filmed in technicolour "totally unnecessary". excuse you, some of us want to see laurence olivier in colour? some of us think that three-strip technicolor is really pretty? we exist!
larry olivier just has the kind of face you want to lie to, and fall in love with, and scrunch your nose up at, and kiss a million times, so I have to say I understand every single one of merle oberon’s actions in this movie.
the competition going on between laurence olivier and merle oberon’s eyebrows in this movie is off the charts.
“but at least men know the truth about themselves. women don’t. they only know the truth about each other.”
a british technicolor romp! that entire hotel room sequence is absolutely to die for and merle oberon flopping around in laurence olivier’s oversized pajamas has made my day.
“I adore you. Do you love me?
I like you.
Is that all?
I'm very fond of you.
That's not enough.
I have interest in you.
That's still not enough.”
just such a special movie and one i’ll cherish forever. it reminded me why i love movies which is such an amazing feeling. when screwball comedies hit right they really hit. this movie is just so wonderful, i’m in awe.
everard was such a cutie, i love clumsy and nerdy man ! i related to leslie so much, she’s such a perfect female lead, she was funny, witty and lovely, just like me :D
“because of my profession i happen to be able to know what lies behind those dear deceiving lips”
“oh you're a dentist?”
“no ! i’m a barrister!”
the tecnicolor made the movie so adorable and aesthetic 🌷 i loved that everything was in pastel colors and i loved the clothes soo much, especially the furs and the big dresses <3
Merle Oberon completely dominates exasperated, befuddled Olivier in a way that’s DELIGHTFUL to behold! There is a horrid, truly reprehensible moment when he goes off in a misogynistic rage, but I loved the early Technicolor and everything else.
What a cute little British screwball! And Larry's cheekbones in all their technicolor glory I would like to thank not only god but Jesus
British drawing room comedy which, in this case, means dozens of doors getting shut with a bang. Miscommunication and mistaken identities might be perfect fuel for comedy, but not when the characters are as charmless as these. Lightly insufferable.
