The Emperors of Byzantium Hardcover – 7 April 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
The Byzantine empire was one of the most successful states of the Middle Ages, ruling over a huge terrain straddling Europe and western Asia for an unrivalled eleven hundred years. Yet its history remains largely unfamiliar. This chronicle brings this majestic yet turbulent period to life through the lives of its emperors: supreme military commander, Head of State and God’s representative on earth, no less.
These were the men and women that presided over many of the foundations of the modern world, from the establishment of the Eastern Orthodox Christian faith, to the magnificent artistic heritage of Hagia Sophia and Mount Athos, and the creation of a visual template for Christian art.
Each illustrated biographical entry contributes to the story of how Byzantium shaped our art, culture, religious beliefs and justice systems, and the role this extraordinary empire played in halting repeated invasions, allowing the idea of ‘Europe’ to flourish. Through stories of nobility and petty revenge, of religious devotion and brutal genocide, and of sexual intrigue and artistic brilliance; from soaring intellectuals to illiterate peasants, eunuchs and despots, this is a humanizing portrayal of individuals, whose role impacted the lives of millions.

Review
'This revelatory and brilliantly researched book opens the door to one of the best-kept secrets in art – the magnificent empire of Byzantium' - Waldemar Januszczak
'Kevin Lygo is a connoisseur, collector and specialist in the Byzantine era, which when combined with his flair for storytelling, make this a publication to savour' - Will Gompertz
'A highly readable, beautifully illustrated survey of the rulers of a great medieval empire that spanned more than a thousand years, from Constantine the Great to the fall of the Eastern Empire. Lygo has succeeded brilliantly in bringing this fascinating but strangely neglected subject to life' - Paul Lay, Editor, History Today, and author of Providence Lost: the Rise and Fall of Cromwell’s Protectorate

Each pen portrait is short - it's a book of around 320 pages, many of which are illustrations, so not a lot of space for detail. That said, the key facts are there, delivered in an informative and entertaining manner, often enlivened by some clear opinions presented by the author - from writers of the time, and in his own view. The totality gives a good overall picture of the Byzantine Empire as it waxed and waned, in all its ridiculous (to our eyes) disputes over arcade details of religious doctrine, its plots, counterplots, cruelties and beauty. I read it cover to cover and greatly enjoyed doing so, but the book would also make for a useful work of reference to dip into, and I suspect I will revise it as such in the future.
Not an in depth history of all the emperors but no worse for that and very readable.
On the plus side, the production values are splendid. It's a handsome book with great quality paper. It's also written in an engaging way and rattles along at a pace.
On the negative side, it is very lightweight in content. Owing to a fair sized font and generous spacing, plus plenty of art, each entry is very slight and you only learn the basics of each reign. You'd probably learn more from wikipedia in many cases. A lot better use could have been made of the amount of space in this book with a smaller font and closer spacing. With more flesh on the bones, this could have been a great book.
For anyone who knows anything about the history of Byzantium, you will be unlikely to learn something that you don't already know.
