Ralph Joseph Kremer - January 22, 1937 - May 15, 2024

Obituary Preview: Ralph J. Kremer, 87, of Independence, IA, formally of Aurora, IA, died on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA.
Ralph was born on January 22, 1937, in Monticello, IA, the son of George M. and Martha B. (Hoffmann) Kremer. He resided at Buck Creek until his parents purchased what is now the home farm near Aurora in 1944. He attended the Buffalo Township Rural School #1 in rural Winthrop, IA, and was a 1955 graduate of Winthrop High School. Ralph went on to enlist in the United States Army and served during the Korean War.
After his time in the service, Ralph returned home in 1957 to help on his family farm. He soon started working for Paul Quint Construction of Winthrop, IA. Ralph enjoyed socializing and often went out to the dance halls in the area. At a dance in Lamont, IA, he met Inez J. Walderbach on a blind date. They were married on February 27, 1960, at St. Patrick’s Church in Ryan, IA.
In 1961, Ralph and Inez began farming near Aurora, IA. Ralph operated several farms in the area and purchased the home farm from his mother where Ralph farmed for many years. He enjoyed every part of farming, especially helping others.
Ralph is the father of six children. He did everything he could for his family and made sure to teach them the value of hard work and helping others. They often took trips to Buchanan County Home to volunteer to help with the residents.
Ralph became a licensed real estate agent in 1971 and enjoyed helping people for over 40 years find their homes and welcome them to the community. He later became a real estate appraiser forming Kremer Appraisals, LLC.
For over thirty-eight years Ralph served his community on the Buchanan County Board of Supervisors. He was a member of the Farm Bureau Executive Board, Buchanan County Extension Council, Buchanan County Cattlemen's Association, the Pork Producers, the Buchanan County Housing Board, Hawkeye Valley Agency on Aging, and as Chairman of the Buchanan County Democratic Party. He was appointed by the governor to the State’s Mental Health Risk Pool. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post 435 in Aurora, IA, and was Vice Commander for many years.
He also served as a past president of the Iowa State Association of County Supervisors, Iowa State Association of Counties, Buchanan County Farm Bureau, and the HVAAA Policy Board.
Ralph applied what he learned in the military to help develop the 911 network and mapping for Buchanan and surrounding counties. His work helped reduce confusion and improve the response times of the First Responders throughout the county.
Ralph was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Winthrop, IA. For many years he and Inez welcomed people to church as Ushers and served on the Parish Council.
He is survived by his daughter, Julie (Rick) Wulfekuhle, Independence, IA, five sons, Jon (Kristina) Kremer, Cedar Rapids, IA, Joseph (Cheryl) Kremer, Arlington, IA, James Kremer, Aurora, IA, Jerard Kremer, Fort Dodge, IA, and Jeffery Kremer, Independence, IA, eleven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two sisters, Virginette Diggs and Darlene Soppa, seven brothers; Robert, Bernard (Connie), David (Dianne), Leroy (Jayne), Eugene (May), and Herb (Suzette), and many nieces and nephews.
Ralph is preceded in death by his wife, Inez Kremer, his daughter-in-law Tambra Kremer, his parents, George and Martha Kremer, two brothers, Edward and Donald Kremer, and a daughter-in-law, Terene Kremer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Winthrop, IA. Inurnment will be held at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Winthrop, IA. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, from 3 PM until 7 PM at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA. A Rosary will be said by the Knights of Columbus at 2:45 PM and a Parish Vigil Service will be held at 7 PM on Tuesday.

Ronnie Lee Millard - July 02, 1954 - May 11, 2024

Obituary Preview: Ronnie Lee Millard, 69, of Hazleton, Iowa died Saturday at Mercy One Hospital in Oelwein, Iowa.
Ronnie was born on July 2, 1954 in Anamosa, Iowa, the son of William K. Millard and Neva M. (Townsend) Thompson. He grew up and attended the Cedar Rapids Community Schools, and later went on to attend the Law enforcement program at Kirkwood Community College. For many years Ronnie worked at various jobs throughout the area. For the last twenty-five years Ronnie worked as a professional driver. He drove for many different Amish families and businesses in the Hazelton, IA area.
He enjoyed spending a lot of his time outdoors and reading. Over the years Ronnie learned all he could about geology and had a nice collection of different rocks from all over Iowa. He also loved to spend his time with his dogs fishing.
Ronnie loved every member of his large family. He enjoyed having a full house for family get-togethers and the holidays. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren; time often spent reading together or telling one of “Papas” jokes.
He is survived by his wife: Kathy Millard, Hazleton, IA, his eight children; Sherry Kern, Waterloo, IA, Shana (Martin Olayo) Millard, Cedar Falls, IA, Joshua Millard, Hazleton, IA, Ben (Andrea) Millard, Swisher, IA, Laura Millard, Hazleton, IA, Stacy Millard, Cedar Rapids, IA, Jessica (Keith) Traywick, West Salem, WI, and Mariah (Chris Wilkinson) Millard, Prairie Du Chein, WI; eighteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one sister and brother-in-law; Kimberly (Florencio) Espirito, and three sisters-in-law; Carol Toms, Kelly Chettinger, Debbie Millard, and his mother-in-law, Shirley Chettinger.
Ronnie was preceded in death by his parents, William Millard and Neva Thompson, two sons; Ronnie Jr. and Dewey Millard, and five siblings; Neil Townsend, Randy Townsend, William Kenneth Millard Jr., John Millard, and Lazetta Millard.

Joan was born on April 12, 1929, in Gilbertville, IA, the daughter of Victor T. and Stella K. (Schares) Schaefer. She attended the Immaculate Conception (Now Don Bosco) Catholic School in Gilbertville, IA. In 1947, Joan graduated from high school and moved to Waterloo, IA. She soon started working in the billing department at the Rath Packing Company in Waterloo.
Joan enjoyed going out dancing with friends, and one night met Patrick O. Rourke at the Electric Park Ballroom. They were married on September 27, 1954, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville, IA. Together they made their home on a farm just outside of Fairbank, IA. In 1956, Joan stopped working at Rath Packing to raise her children.
She and Patrick raised their four children on the farm and loved watching their family grow throughout the years. She loved taking care of her family and looking after her grandchildren. She often hosted holiday parties at her house and enjoyed the countless hours of cooking for the family. She made sure to teach her grandchildren her recipes and how to cook.
Joan was a woman of strong faith and principles. She valued her relationships with not just her family, but also her neighbors and friends. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fairbank, IA. For over ten years she volunteered at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein, IA making quilts for the needy, and also with Cedar Valley Hospice in Independence, IA.
She is survived by her children; Larry (Jill) Rourke, Dunkerton, IA, Tom (Kim) Rourke, Fairbank, IA, Julie (Bill) Delagardelle, Dunkerton, IA, and Jane (Eric) Zangerle, Swisher, IA, ten grandchildren: Kayla (Tyler Scribner) Rourke, Emily (Jacob) Vsetecka, Andrew (Cassie) Rourke, Kelly (Thomas Sadler) Rourke, Troy Rourke, Jenna (Neal) Beck, Phillip (Morgan)Delagardelle, Jacey Zangerle, and Ted Zangerle, nine great-grandchildren: Jaycee, Max, Mackenzie, Caroline, Henry, Jensen, Louis, Jayden, Brooks, a sister, Cleola (Kitty) Robb, Raymond, IA, a brother, Thomas (Carol) Schaefer, Gilbertville, IA, a sister-in-law, Marilyn Schaefer, Gilbertville, IA, and many nieces and nephews. Donald Thomas Doyle - April 09, 1968 - May 04, 2024

Donald was born on April 9, 1968, in Independence, IA, the son of Phillip E. and Marilyn (Derby) Doyle. He attended the Independence Community Schools and was a 1986 graduate of Jefferson High School. Don went on to enlist in the United States Navy in 1987. He was stationed on the U.S.S. Saratoga and served during the Gulf War. After Don was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1991, he returned to Independence, IA. Don went on to study to be an Electrician at Hawkeye Community College and graduated in 2008. He soon took a job as an Electrician at John Deere in Waterloo. He spent over fifteen years maintaining the machines and buildings. Don made many friends at work and served for several years as a Union Steward for UAW 838.
He was a member of V.F.W. Post 2440 and the American Legion Post 30 in Independence, IA.
On February 26, 2013, Don married Kelley K. Hocken in Cancun, Mexico. Don was an avid fisherman and enjoyed being outside. He also enjoyed going boating, camping, and golfing. He loved to travel and took his family on vacations every year. What Don loved the most was spending time with family and friends.
Don loved being a grandfather and enjoyed every moment he spent with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Kelley Doyle, Independence, IA, his sons, James (Candace) Hocken, and Jonathan (Nikki) Hocken, both of Independence, IA, five grandchildren: Huxley, Hollis, Aleaha, Kaelyn, and Jordan, a sister, Brenda Peyman, Independence, IA, four nieces, a nephew, and many lifelong friends.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, Phillip Doyle, and Marilyn Bengston.
Visitation will be held from 12 PM until 2 PM on Friday, May 10, 2024, at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA. A Memorial service will be held at 2 PM. A Celebration of Life will be held from 4 PM until 7 PM at Denali’s Restaurant in Independence, after the services on Friday.

Mark David Adams - April 20, 1967 - May 02, 2024

Obituary Preview: Mark Adams of Glendale, Arizona died on May 2, 2024 as a result of a tragic accident.
Mark was born in Oelwein, Iowa on April 20, 1967 to Mary Ann and Bill Adams. He graduated from St. John’s High School in Independence, Iowa. He joined the Air Force and spent time in Texas, Colorado, Arizona, Japan, the Middle East, and other countries unknown. Mark was honorably discharged on June 29, 1994. He was schooled in and worked in the Aircraft Repair Field. That led him to Duncan Aviation at Lincoln, Nebraska where he was currently employed as RTS Inspector for all Rapid Response Teams for the Midwest and West Coast. Mark was also a member of the volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife Chelsea, mother Mary Ann Kelly, sister Lori (Fran) Goedken, and four brothers: Les Adams, Mike (Jacque) Adams, Terry (Tiffany) Adams, and Jim (Kim) Adams, and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his dad, William “Bill” Adams.

Margie Ann Wirtz - Unknown - April 29, 2024

Obituary Preview: Margie Ann Wirtz, 80, of Independence, Iowa passed away peacefully on April 29, 2024, at the ABCM Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Iowa.
Margie was born on March 25, 1944, to Ed and Maxine Ryan and raised in the Dundee area. She attended Dundee School until it closed in 1959 and attended one year in Manchester before graduating with the Lamont class of 1961. In 1971 she completed the LPN program at Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo and in 1972 she began her 40+ year nursing career at People’s Memorial Hospital in Independence. She also worked eight years at West Village Care Center (now ABCM Rehabilitation Center) and returned to PMH Long Term Care and BCHC as a staff nurse before her “first” retirement in 2009. She returned to work in the BCHC Outreach Clinic for several years.
Marge cherished the friendships she made with co-workers and patients, but her favorite job was being “G” to her eight grandchildren. She enjoyed going to garage sales, reading, and lunches with friends. She will be remembered for sending greeting cards for all holidays and special occasions.
She is survived by her daughter: Ann (Troy) Bolton, Independence, IA; Bret (Stephanie) Wirtz of Maynard, and Tracy Wirtz of Maynard, IA, Abigail and Meghan Bolton, and Matthew (Nichole Stephens) Bolton, Mason (Marie) Wirtz, Decker Wirtz, and Dawson Wirtz, Courtney Wirtz, Madylin Wirtz, one sister- in-law, Merlene Ryan, of Dundee, IA, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Wirtz in 2006, her parents Ed and Maxine Ryan, and one brother, Bill Ryan in 2022.
The family would like to thank ABCM Rehabilitation Center, Dr. Duane Jasper, Joni Henderson, and Cedar Valley Hospice for all their care, kindness, and compassion shown to Marge and her family over the last few months.

She spent her early years living in Ryan and Monticello, IA, before the Pierce family made their home in Winthrop, IA in 1968. Sam graduated from East Buchanan High School in 1971 and went on to attend the University of Northern Iowa. Studying English and Journalism, Sam graduated in 1975 and
began teaching as a substitute teacher throughout the Buchanan County area. In 1977, Sam started teaching full-time at the Independence High School as an English teacher. There she enjoyed her time with the students teaching them everything she knew, retiring in 2010. After
thirty-three years of teaching, countless students will remember her as being one of the best teachers. She is survived by her sister, Vicki (Calvin) Wessel, Platteville, WI, her nieces; Kristin Wessel, Platteville, WI, Renee (Mark) Vosberg, Cuba City, WI, and Jolene (Scott) Mitchell, Boscobel, WI, as well as great nieces and nephews: Alaina, Olivia, Aidan, & Jaelynn Slack, Lance, Madison, & Levi Vosberg,
and Macy & Hayley Mitchell, and her special friends, Patty Cameron and Jacquie McTaggart. Sam is preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Marjorie Pierce, and a great-niece who was born an
angel, Presley Mitchell. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2024 from 1 PM until 4 PM, with the funeral service being held at 10:30 AM on Monday, May 6. A luncheon will follow. Curtis Salow - September 25, 1963 - April 24, 2024

Obituary Preview: Curtis Carl Salow, 60, of Independence, IA formally of Earlville, IA, died on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, IA.
Curt was born on September 25, 1963, in Manchester, IA, the son of Harold C. and Mona L. (Grigg) Salow. He grew up with his eight siblings in Earlville, IA, and attended the Maquoketa Valley School District. While in high school Curt loved to play football and was given the nickname “Myrtle the Turtle.” He graduated in 1982 and went on to play football for a short time at the University of Dubuque. Curt was an avid sportsman and excelled at golfing, bowling, and shooting pool. Curt made many friends enjoying these sports over the years, and shared his love of golf with his grandchildren. Many memories were made on the golf course, which the kids truly cherish.
Curt worked as a bartender at the Party Bar in Earlville and developed many lifelong friends there. He held many professions in which he served his community such as a school bus driver and jailor at the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department. For over twenty years, Curt was a volunteer Firefighter and EMT with the Earlville Fire Department. In 1999, Curt started working at the Mental Health Institute in Independence. Curt was proud to serve AFSCME as President of Local 2987, and as Vice President of AFSCME Council 61; negotiating many contracts over the years and fighting for the rights of his fellow coworkers and Union members. Curt ended his employment at MHI in 2023, after twenty-four years on the job. He soon took a position at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo as a security officer, and worked there until his passing.
On October 4, 2002, Curt married Kym Suzann Noack, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Earlville, IA. On that day he not only became a husband, but also became a father to Ashley, Jennifer, and Jami. He provided stability and peace to his girls’ lives and loved being their dad. Curt reveled in spending time with his grandchildren, and to each he was important in so many ways. In the eyes of his family, Curt was truly the best man in the world and the biggest blessing his family had ever received.
He is survived by his wife, Kym Salow, Independence, his daughters; Ashley Sherrets, Manchester, Jennifer (Anthony) Ryckman, Cedar Falls, and Jami (Adam) Griffin, Manchester, seven grandchildren; Dahlia Ochoa-Sherrets, Oliver, Nolan, and Abram Ryckman, Arlo, Hayes, and Gabriel Griffin, six sisters; Barbara Cree, Manchester, Dawn (Wege) Lewin, Earlville, Vicki (Rick) Althoff, Strawberry Point, Mary (David) Pasker, Earlville, Ann (Fred) Davis, Earlville, and Becky Salow, Manchester, two brothers; Robert “Bob” (Susie) Salow, Earlville, IA, and Tim (Becky) Salow, Manchester, and many friends, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Darryll William Leisinger - January 29, 1946 - April 24, 2024

Obituary Preview: Darryll William Leisinger, born on January 29th, 1946, in Waterloo, Iowa, passed away on April 24th, 2024. Darryll spent the early part of his life in Iowa where he was employed for many years with John Deere. He and his family later relocated to Wellington, Kansas where he made his mark in the aircraft industry. He began locally at Plessey Welco before transferring to Cessna Aircraft, where he spent the majority of his career before retiring. Darryll's dedication and dependability was evident during his time serving his country in the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam era.
Darryll was a loyal husband to Lynda (Crowell) Leisinger, whom he married on August 17th, 1968. Throughout their many years of matrimony, they built a foundation for growing a family tree that will continue to thrive, grow strong roots, and let their branches stretch far.
Darryll is survived by his beloved wife, Lynda Leisinger of Wellington, Kansas; son, Shawn Leisinger and wife Marti of Topeka, Kansas; daughter, Jennifer Cody and husband Al of Rose Hill, Kansas; daughter, Holly Parkey and husband Harold of Wellington, Kansas; daughter, Lyndsay Pletcher and husband Weston of Park City, Kansas; grandchildren, Nicole Taylor of Topeka, Kansas, Ashtyn Cody of Kingman, Kansas, Morgyn and Gracyn Cody of El Dorado, Kansas, Delaney Miller and husband Zach of Augusta, Kansas, Camden, Sophia, Sullivan and Sawyer Parkey all of Wellington, Kansas, Payne and Pryor Pletcher of Park City, Kansas; 4 great-grandchildren: Giselle Soto, Gavin Taylor, Bristol Cody and Ella Cody; twin brother, Darwyn Leisinger and wife Berneice of Waverly, Iowa; brother, Warren Leisinger and wife Areatha of Pine City, Minnesota. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Rebekah Leisinger; son, Jamie Leisinger and brother, Dennis Leisinger.
A memorial service in honor of Darryll will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 30th, 2024 at the First Presbyterian Church, 1419 Western Avenue, Wellington, Kansas. Interment will take place at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 4th, 2024 at the Littleton Cemetery, Littleton, Iowa.
Memorial contributions can be given in his name to the Wellington Senior Center or to Meals on Wheels. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.

A memorial service in honor of Darryll will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 30th, 2024 at the First Presbyterian Church, 1419 Western Avenue, Wellington, Kansas. Interment will take place at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 4th, 2024 at the Littleton Cemetery, Littleton, Iowa.

Darryll spent the early part of his life in Iowa where he was employed for many years with John Deere. He and his family later relocated to Wellington, Kansas where he made his mark in the aircraft industry. He began locally at Plessey Welco before transferring to Cessna Aircraft, where he spent the majority of his career before retiring. Darryll's dedication and dependability was evident during his time serving his country in the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam era.

Obituary Preview: Charles L. Brown, 85, of Independence, IA, died on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at Lexington Estates in Independence, IA.
Charles was born on January 16, 1939, in rural Troy Mills, IA, the son of Lyle and Ada P. (Price) Brown. He grew up on a small farm outside of Coggon, IA, in an area known as Sodtown. Charles attended the rural country schools, and when he finished school he started working on the family farm and helped on his neighbor’s farms. He went on to work at the National Oats Company in Cedar Rapids, IA, for several years. In 1970, He started a long career in roofing. Charles worked for over thirty years mostly doing Hot Tar Roofs with the AD Holts Roofing Company in Cedar Rapids. He finally retired in 2000.
On February 29, 1960, Charles married Janice Moriarty. Together they had five children, Penny, Vicky, Charles, Michael, and Daniel. They were later divorced.
On March 21, 1970, Charles later was remarried. He married Nancy Merrifield. Together they made their home in rural Walker, IA, and had six children, Darrell, Steve, Laurie, Peggy, Tonya, and Shawn.
He is survived by nine children: Charles (Ruth) Brown, Dubuque, IA, Michael (Joan) Brown, Brandon, IA, Daniel (Wendy) Brown, Winthrop, IA, Darrell (Christine) Brown, Independence, IA, Steven Brown, Independence, IA, Laurie (Jeff McDonald) Brown, Quasqueton, IA, Peggy (John Fennern) Mikesell, Cedar Rapids, IA, Tonya (Billy) McGonicle, Cedar Falls, IA, and Shawn Brown, Independence, IA, thirty-nine grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, a brother, Ronald (Judy) Brown, Bowling Brook, IL, a sister, Irene Pyle, Knoxville, TN, and many nieces and nephews.

Obituary Preview: Charles H. Werner Sr., 86, of Independence, IA, formally of Winthrop, IA, died on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, IA.
Charles was born on December 6, 1937, in rural Walker, IA, the son of Harry H. and Tracy K. (Novak) Werner. He attended the rural country schools and the Quasqueton Elementary School. In 1956, Charles graduated from the Winthrop High School. He not only got a diploma from the school but also found the love of his life, Nancy Jo Shaffer. They were married on August 3, 1957, at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Winthrop, IA. They briefly lived in Cedar Rapids while Charles worked at Square D. They moved back home to the Winthrop area and started farming.
In 1962 Charles took a job in the John Deere Foundry in Waterloo, IA. Over his thirty years at the company, Charles held many different positions and made many good friends along the way. He retired in 1992.
Charles dedicated his life to taking care of his family. He worked many long hours to provide for his family, but when he had time off during the shutdowns at the factory, he spent every moment with his wife and kids. In his retirement, he made it his full-time job to spend time with his grandchildren. They were taught how to fish, and how to tell a story the right way. He also enjoyed playing horseshoes with the guys, family dinners, and playing pinochle.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Werner, Independence, IA, his children; Brenda Lou Werner Willson, Springville, IA, Cheryl (Keith) Curry, Jesup, IA, Chuck (Janine) Werner, Independence, IA, Sally (Ron) Slife, Center Point, IA, Teresa (Artie) Dudley, Independence, IA, and Mark (Sandi) Werner, Winthrop, IA, twenty-one grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, two brothers-in-law, Jerry (Jan) Shaffer and Paul Shaffer, and many nieces and nephews.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Tracy Werner, two sons-in-law, Eugene Willson and Dave Moore, and five sisters: Mable Rick, Dorothy Werner, Marie Cady, Edna Rowe, and Maxine Grissom.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church in Winthrop, IA. Burial will be held at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Winthrop, IA. Jane was born on March 3, 1955, in Cedar Rapids, IA, the daughter of John H. and Luella G. (Main) Heasley. She grew up in rural Rowley, IA, and attended the Rowley, IA school. She graduated from Independence High School in 1973 and went on to attend a Nursing School in Marshalltown, IA.
Jane made her home in Hudson, IA. She worked at The Hudson House for many years, at Eagle Center, and the Maid-Rite in Waterloo, IA. She also ran a tax preparation and bookkeeping business.
Jane loved cooking, and would regularly cook meals for several of her friends in her neighborhood. She was also a lifelong avid reader.
She is survived by a daughter; Rebecca (Kelly) Sanders, Ottumwa, IA, two grandchildren, Nicole Hampton and Nathan Stangeland, her three great-grandchildren, Addisyn, Braelyn, Timothy, a brother, Paul Emerick, Mesa, AZ, a sister, Kathy (Lance) Lange, Delhi, IA, several nieces and nephews, and many cousins.
Jane is preceded in death by her parents, John and Luella Heasley.

Obituary Preview: D. Kathleen Morris passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2024, in Quasqueton, Iowa.
Dorothy Kathleen Aldrich was born in Mullinville, Kansas on May 26, 1932. She was the first of five children born to Stewart L. Aldrich and Marjorie R. (Graham) Aldrich. When she was five years old her family returned to her father’s hometown of Quasqueton, Iowa. She attended Quasqueton Community School. As a small child, the family had a small Dairy and she would help her dad deliver milk and cream to the customers. While in school she learned to play piano and won many local vocal competitions. She also played girls six on six basketball in high school.
On March 19, 1949, she married Arnold Lee Morris in Walker, Iowa. They lived in several places in Buchanan County. In 1957 they purchased their acreage on the edge of Quasky, where they raised their kids and quarter horses on the edge of the Wapsipinicon River. She was a member of the Quasqueton Union Church, where she was previously a Sunday school teacher. She was a former secretary of the Quasqueton Historical Society (Kathleen was always proud of her Quasky heritage). She was a great Hawkeye fan and loved and liked to discuss most sports. Kathleen worked for a short time at Collins Radio and was then a stay-at-home wife and mother. She later did daycare and elder care. She loved her family fiercely and helped them whenever she was needed. She enjoyed attending her grand and great-grandchildren’s activities.
Left to cherish her memory are her son: Kim (Marlene O’Clair) Morris, Swisher, IA, and daughter: Kathy (Tom) Cook, Independence, IA, grandchildren: Kayleen (Dustin) Schott, Bryan Cook, Kodi (Jeremy Smock) Cook, and Jenna (Chad) Houge, great-grandchildren: Dunan and Brecken Schott, Emma Mast, Chloe and Carlee Callan, Ella, Ty, and Braxton Houge, Zoey and Chloe Le, and great-great grandson: Jamison Le, a brother: Larry (Janet) Aldrich, Cedar Rapids, IA, and sister Vicki Cornwell, Vinton, IA.

Obituary Preview: Virginia A. Kuper, 84, of Independence, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 25, 2024, at ABCM Rehabilitation Center – West Campus in Independence, IA.
Virginia was born on a farm in rural Independence, IA, on March 31, 1939, the daughter of Frank and Martha L. (Copenhaver) Wilson. She was the youngest of six children, and grew up in Brandon, Jesup and Independence, IA. In 1957, she graduated from the Independence High School, and went on to study nursing. Virginia met John Arthur Kuper through family and quickly fell in love. They were married on December 14, 1958 in Independence, IA.
John was in the Navy and Virginia joined him as his Naval career took them across the country. When John was deployed, Virginia moved back to Brandon, IA where she continued to work as a nurse’s aide. Upon John’s return and retirement from the Navy the Kuper family made their home in Independence, IA.
Virginia loved to cook. In 1984, she started her own catering business and employed her children for her successful enterprise. She soon took a job as a cook at the Independence School District and quickly became the head cook. She insisted on making sure that the students had “Good Food” at lunch time. She worked for the school for over a decade, and retired.
Virginia loved her family with every ounce of her being. It was extremely important for her to keep in touch with her grandchildren and made sure her kids were doing the right thing. Her favorite times were when they all came home to be together, and the laughter was guaranteed.
She is survived by her five children; Melinda (Dennis) Hunter, Brandon, IA, Morgan (Becky) Kuper, Jesup, IA, Richard (Jennifer) Kuper, Colorado Springs, CO, Joni (Mike) Doe, Cedar Rapids, IA, and Janet Kuper, Vinton, IA, eleven grandchildren, eight step grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Virginia is preceded in death by her parents; Frank and Martha Wilson, her husband, John Kuper in 2015, a son, Lawrence Kuper, three brothers, Lyle, Richard, and James Wilson, and two sisters Laura Kalbfleisch, and Jeanne Wilson.
The Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, March 29, 2024, at Hope Wesleyan Church in Independence, IA followed by the inurnment at the Mt Hope Cemetery, Independence. Friends and Family may join us from 4 PM until 7 PM on Thursday March 28th, at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA.

Obituary Preview: It is with great sadness that we would like to announce the passing of Pamela Lynn (Swaim) Gordon of Independence, IA. Pamela took her final breath on March 22, 2024 at St. Luke’s hospital in Cedar Rapids, IA. She was born August 21, 1964 in Lemoore, California to Paul and Marguerite (Pocock) Swaim. Pamela graduated from Lemoore High School in 1982, then lived in California and Arizona before settling in Iowa in 2002. She married Scott Raymond Gordon of Westgate, IA on June 9, 2002 in Westgate, IA and they made their home in Independence, IA for the rest of their years. She was widowed on December 17, 2017.
Pamela was a proud member of Living Water Church in Independence, Iowa. She worked as a medical assistant for many years and most recently was providing in-home services through a local community living agency. She enjoyed watching youth sports, spending time outside, and crafting.
Pamela was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by three brothers, all of Lemoore, CA; several nieces and nephews; a stepdaughter, Celia (Dustin) Even of Jesup, IA; two step grandsons; and a significant other, Robert McGee of Lemoore, CA.
A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, April 28, 2024 at 10:30am at Living Water Church, Independence, IA.

She spent her early years living in Jesup, IA, and attended the Jesup Community Schools. She later attended the Independence and Oelwein Community Schools and graduated from Oelwein High School in 2009. Tessa received her LPN degree from Kaplan Community College in Cedar Falls, IA. Tessa spent several years living throughout Iowa. While living in Nevada, IA, she worked for Priority Envelope. Tessa enjoyed the work she did there and loved her co-workers. She returned to Oelwein in 2020 and went to work for Birch Cabinet and East Penn Manufacturing.
Tessa loved taking care of people, and in 2021 became a Certified Nurse’s Aide. She soon went to work for Maple Crest Nursing Home, Fayette, IA, and later for ABCM Rehabilitation Center – West Campus in Independence, IA.
Tessa had her two children: Adriahna and D’Marius Hill, and they were her whole world. Tessa loved spending every minute she could with her kids. They loved going swimming together, T-ball league, trips to the Omaha Zoo, and the fourth of July holiday. Their favorite holiday was Halloween and loved all the scary antics. Some of the best memories they made were spending time at home, just watching movies at night projected on the side of the house.
She is survived by her two children: Adriahna and D’Marius Hill, her mother, Mary Hough, Hazelton, IA, her father, Ken (Annette) Armstrong, Quasqueton, IA, her maternal grandmother, Marian Hough, Jesup, IA, an aunt Lesllie (Evan) Queen, Mt. Home, AR, her cousins, Summer Menkveld, Corey Sebetka, and Ryan Sebetka, and her godparents, Connie (Blad) and David Funke.

Obituary Preview: Lois A. Wathen, 94, of Independence, IA, passed away on March 14, 2024, at the Hiawatha Care Center in Hiawatha, IA.
Lois was born on September 5, 1929, in Fayette County, Iowa, the daughter of Inez and Lester Cue. Her family moved around a lot when she was younger; and being the second youngest of seven children she always had someone to play with. The Cue settled in independence when she was in ninth grade, and in high school she played basketball and directed the play her senior year. Lois was the only one of her siblings to graduate from high school; she graduated from Independence High School in 1946. She learned to value education for the rest of her life.
Lois was working in a movie theater as an usher when she met Charles “Bill” Wathen. They were later married on November 23, 1949, in the parsonage of the First United Methodist Church in Independence, IA. They made their home together in an apartment in Independence. She often remembered that while living in that apartment they used the kitchen window for their refrigerator during the winter, until spring came.
Lois worked for many years as a secretary at the Independence Middle School until she retired in 1991. She always helped with all the chores around the farm after a full day of work and put a home-cooked dinner on the table. Lois volunteered at Hospice and was a member of the Methodist Church.
She is survived by her three children: Gail Murphy, Michael (Lynne) Wathen, Carl (Lynne) Wathen, and a foreign exchange student, Carol Fagan from New Zealand; seven grandchildren: Ben Murphy, Megan Murphy Salyer, Leia Wathen, Melissa Kopf, Brian Wathen, Bethany Votroubek, and Alison Wathen Herfkens; ten great grandchildren, and a sister-in-law, Linda Martin. She is also survived by her pup, Opie.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill, and all of her siblings: Minnie LaVon Brelsford, Bernard Cue, Mildred Sines, Faye Cue, Lyle Cue, and Beverly “June” Carson, as well as her son-in-law Dennis Murphy.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM on Monday, March 18th, 2024, at the First United Methodist Church in Independence, IA. Burial will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Obituary Preview: Bernadine Wilkinson, 85, of Cedar Rapids, IA passed away peacefully surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at the Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.
Bernadine Wilkinson was born on October 31, 1938 at the family home near Lamont, IA, the fourth of twelve children to FD and Hazel (Anderson) Brown. She quickly became known as “Babe” to family and friends.
Bernadine “Babe” attended Byron Country School and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1956. She worked various jobs, starting at an early age. One of her first jobs was as a waitress at Home Café in Independence, where one of her steady customers was a young high school student named Tom Wilkinson. She and Tom were married at Immaculate Conception Church in 1962. They made their home together in Cedar Rapids, IA where they raised their four children. They were longtime members of the St. Pius X Catholic Church.
For many years she worked as a bookkeeper for Brite-Way Window Service and Irwin’s Clothing, for her son-in-law Lee in Marion. Babe retired from Banks of Iowa Computer Services in 2000.
Babe is survived by her husband, Tom, and their four children: daughter Michele (Lee) Larson, sons: Brian (Jani Baylor), John (Holly), and Eric; six grandsons: Todd (Hannah), Brad (Jen), A.J. and Brent (Faye) Larson, and Ben (Irma) and Ethan Wilkinson; great-grandson: Ellis Larson and great-granddaughter: Annie Larson. She is also survived by seven brothers: Bernie (Doris), Tom, Mike, Steve, John (Shelly), Paul (Cindy), and Dennis (Janet), one sister, Pat Brown, a sister-in-law, Agnes Wilkinson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Mary Jo Brown, sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Duane Forkner, Sister Mary Rigdon, sisters-in-law, Cheri Brown and Bonnie Brown, Tom’s parents John and Emma Wilkinson, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Janice and Bob Dutoit, and brother-in-law Paul Wilkinson.
She blessed our hearts with her life, her laughter, and most importantly her unconditional love. She treasured her family and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as grandma and great-grandma.
The visitation will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at 1:00 PM with services to follow at 2:00 PM at Reiff Family Center, Independence, IA. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family or to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, IA.

Inez grew up on a farm in rural Ryan, IA and later moved to Ryan, and was a 1956 graduate of Ryan High School. She wanted to work as an x-ray technician and went on to study at St, Joseph’s Hospital in Ottumwa, IA. Inez graduated in 1958 and returned home to Ryan, IA, and started working at the Manchester Hospital.
Inez enjoyed spending time with friends and going dancing. At a dance in Lamont, IA, she met Ralph Kremer on a blind date. They were married on February 27, 1960, at St. Patrick’s Church in Ryan, IA. They made their home in Ryan for a few years before moving to Winthrop, IA. They had six children together, and Inez loved taking care and keeping her kids in line.
In the 1970’s the Kremer family purchased the family farm in rural Aurora, IA. There Inez enjoyed helping out on the farm and caring for their livestock. She spent countless hours maintaining a huge garden and canning the produce that came from it.
When her kids were older Inez returned to work outside the home. She took a position as a x-ray technician at the Oelwein Hospital for several years. She later accepted a position at Peoples Memorial Hospital (later Buchanan County Health Center). She became head of the radiology department where she remained until her retirement. She later came back to serve on the Buchanan County Health Board for many years.
Inez loved her family and supported them in all their adventures. She enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren and cooking and baking for them. They often made strawberries and raspberry smoothies when she babysat. Her endless cookie tins will be missed by all her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph Kremer, Independence, IA, her daughter, Julie (Rick) Wulfekuhle, Independence, IA, five sons, Jon (Kristina) Kremer, Cedar Rapids, IA, Joseph (Cheryl) Kremer, Arlington, IA, James Kremer, Aurora, IA, Jerard (Tambra) Kremer, Fort Dodge, IA, and Jeffery Kremer, Independence, IA, eleven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a sister, Judith Quint, Waterloo, IA, a sister-in-law Janet Walderbach of Cedar Rapids, IA, brother-in law Glenn Quint of Shellsburg, IA, and many nieces and nephews.
Inez is preceded in death by her parents, John and Bernice Walderbach, three sisters, Ann Durfey, Jean Fank, and Frances Quint, two brothers, James and Louis Walderbach and two brothers in infancy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Winthrop, IA. Inurnment will be held at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Winthrop, IA. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4 PM until 7 PM at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA. A Rosary will be said by the Catholic Daughters at 3:45 PM and a Parish Vigil Service will be held at 7 PM on Friday.

Chad was born on June 3, 1980, in Vinton, IA the son of George F. “Fred” and Debbra M (Sprague) Smith. Chad spent his early years living in Vinton, IA and attended the Vinton Elementary School. In 1992 the Smith family moved to Winthrop, IA, where he attended the East Buchanan Schools. In 1999 Chad graduated from East Buchanan High School and soon started working for CBB Packaging in Cedar Rapids, IA. Chad went on to work for Fisher Printing and Nordstroms in Cedar Rapids.
Chad will always be remembered for his warmheartedness and ability to make friends. He loved spending time with his friends from work and the ones he just made. He had a strong will and liked to do things his way, and rarely asked for help, but would be there if you asked him.
He is survived by his parents Fred and Debbra Smith, Winthrop, IA, a brother, Andy (Alison) Smith, Cedar Rapids, IA, his grandmother, Beverly Sprague, Independence, IA, an uncle, Dennis (Pat) Sprague, Independence, IA, several cousins, and many close friends.
Chad is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Leland Sprague, paternal grandparents, George M. and Maxine Smith, and two aunts Mary Cecil, and Dorothy Smith.

Betty was a member of St. John Catholic Church and St. John Rosary Society for many years. She was a teacher in a one room schoolhouse prior to her marriage to Clifford. A fun-loving woman, she will be remembered by all those she touched as a warm, gracious, and sincere person with a great love for Cliff, her family, and ice cream.
Betty is survived by her six children: Teresa Fabert, Kathy (Rick) Vaughn, Paul (Becky) Zieser, Jane Zieser, Kevin (Ann) Zieser, and Kyle (Sarah) Zieser, daughter-in-law: Sharon Zieser, twelve grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law: Delores Zieser, and many nieces and nephews.

Obituary Preview: Meghan M. Devane, 21, of Marion, IA by way of Independence, IA, but really from Troy, NY (That’s up state Ya’ll not NYC) died tragically Friday March 1, 2024, in a car accident (I know… you always want to know how a person died).
Megs was a graduate of Independence Jr. Sr. High School and moved to Marion in 2023 to pursue her passion.
She was loved by so many around the country and had such a fierce love for life it’s really too much to get into here. If you would like to get to know her better or just to say goodbye, there will be a celebration of life on Sunday, March 17th (yes it may turn into a good old fashion Irish Wake) at the Reiff Family Center, Independence, IA, from 1 to 4 pm.
Megs is survived by (nobody should EVER have to say this) her mom Liz, her fiancée Logan Bushman, her grandmother, Roberta Hoskins (Honorary) her grandmother, Sue, besties Barb and Tony (my rocks), Nana, her future in-laws, Mike and Mandi, and too many friends and honorary aunts, uncles to mention.
Now, not to be rude or unappreciated of your amazing Midwest hospitality but please refrain from sending or bringing me any food (although I sincerely appreciate the thought) it would be wonderful of you to bring something to the celebration of life, to share with everyone.
