Mark Nathan

British baritone Mark Nathan is a graduate of Birmingham University, the Royal College of Music, and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He is a former Emerging Artist at Scottish Opera.

In the current season he performs Wagner Faust (Irish National Opera); Dr Falke Die Fledermaus and Count Almaviva Le nozze di Figaro (Vienna-Tel Aviv Vocal Connection); and Schaunard in a film version of Robin Norton-Hale’s Olivier Award-winning La bohème produced by Finite Films.

Among his recent highlights are Schaunard La bohème, Maximilian Candide (Welsh National Opera); Giuseppe The Gondoliers and Mr Goldbury Utopia Ltd (Scottish Opera); and Hunter Rusalka, Guglielmo OperaFirst Così fan tutte (Garsington Opera).

In 2019, while at the at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Mark sang the role of Joseph de Rocher in the staged UK premiere of Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking for which he received outstanding critical acclaim. He went on to cover the role for both Welsh National Opera and Israeli Opera.

His operatic roles include Don Giovanni, Marcello La bohème (Opera Loki); Papageno Die Zauberflöte (Hampstead Garden Opera); Rabotnik The Fiery Angel (Scottish Opera); Le Directeur Les mamelles de Tirésias and Death Sāvitri  (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland); Le Dancaïre Carmen (Waterperry Opera Festival); Dr Falke Die Fledermaus, Wagner Faust and Counsel Trial by Jury (Winterbourne Opera); Moralès Carmen (Riverside Opera); Sir Joseph Porter HMS Pinafore (Harwich Festival); Koko The Mikado (Co-Opera Co.); and Jack Point The Yeomen of the Guard  (Portsmouth Guildhall). He has also covered Herr von Faninal Der Rosenkavalier (Garsington Opera).

As a recitalist and oratorio soloist he has performed Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs and Dona Nobis Pacem, Bach Wachet auf, Ruft uns due Stimme and St John Passion; Requiems by Fauré, Duruflé, and Saint-Saëns; Finzi In Terra Pax; Howard Goodall Eternal Light Requiem; Stanford Songs of the Fleet; Coleridge-Taylor The Death of Minnehaha.

Mark is also a keen lyricist and his debut musical, Riptide: The Slasher Musical, garnered an award from the Musical Theatre Network, following successful performances at the Edinburgh Fringe. He has since written several other musicals including a set of songs for the BBC. He has also written a collection of children’s poems: Riddle Me This, which were set to music by Ronald Corp for the New London Children’s Choir.
