Did anyone pick these up? I'm interested to hear how the sound quality was on the discs.
Willy,
I was pleased with the sound quality. It's not exactly an audiophile experience, but the original vinyl releases weren't either. As you might expect from the inclusion of the previously-unreleased bonus tracks, these two albums do appear to have been sourced from the original tapes, or at least from low-generation copies.

22d,
Try the first one, Don't Hold Back. The second album is more sophisticated but the songs aren't as catchy ... it's more like Traffic than the Beatlesque first album. (It's still a good album, though.)

BTW, I'm removing the "CD-R" designation from the title of this thread based on this Amazon customer review ...
Quote:
I was so happy to see both Sky albums, "Don't Hold Back" and "Sailor's Delight" finally being released for the first time in digital form. I've owned both of these albums on vinyl since they were released in 1970/71, and they have become two of my favorites in my collection. Sky was Doug Fieger's first recording group before going on to form The Knack ("My Sharona"). Sadly Doug passed away from a long battle with cancer in 2010. But these albums present the early talent Fieger and fellow bandmates John Courey and Rob Stawinski possessed as a very tight and solid band. Back in the day, some track lyrics were considered too risque and potentially offensive to be aired on the radio, such as the track "How's That Treatin' Your Mouth Babe?", but today would be G rated.
Both albums contain the full original album content plus some bonus tracks which are quite good. The remastering is superb, bringing out some background vocals that were hidden on the vinyl version. The vinyl albums are quite rare, so these are a treat for anyone who is searching for them. And if you are like me and have had these in your collection for decades, you will love how these tracks sound now!
Even though the Amazon listing states they are CD-R, these are high quality CDs with all the original album art intact plus some additional artwork in a jewel case. The CDs themselves have a production look and feel with a screened label (not pasted on, not Lightscribed, but just like any mass produced disc would have). So "don't hold back" on buying either of these discs because of the disclaimer.
He's right about the quality packaging and remastered sound. I'm not quite as certain as he is that these are "real" CDs, but they're definitely of a much higher standard than the CD-Rs we get from many artists' websites nowadays.

I bought both and now playing the cd from "Sky" - "Don't Hold Back" and really like it. As Linda says in some places they really sound like Traffic's "John Barleycorn" but with Jimmy Miller you are going get some swagger in some of those other tracks.
With an all-star line-up like Gary Wright, Chris Wood (Traffic), Bobby Keys, Jim Price, Alan White and background singers P.P. Arnold, Flo Bender and Doris Troy how can you miss.
With the late great Jimmy Miller producing at Olympic Studios with Andy Johns I find this being a missing treasure.
The 1971 album "Sailor's Delight" also has Jimmy Miller and Andy Johns at the helm in Olympic Studios. Ian Stewart plays piano on a track with Jim Price and Bobby Keys involved as well.
Can't wait to get to the first. Well worth the purchase if anyone is sitting on the fence.

As a big fan of The Knack, I've considered buying these since they first appeared, but I don't know anything about the records themselves. Was Doug Fieger the lead singer on most or all of the tracks? I certainly don't expect them to sound like The Knack, but what DO they sound like? I also wish his solo album, First Things First, was more readily available, but it's only a digital download now.

Here are some audio rips from the original vinyl pressings. (The pops and clicks and whatnots are not on the CDs!)
Linda, I can't thank you enough for posting those audio rips. Now I have a much better idea what I'll be getting when I order the Sky CDs. I would buy them now but have to wait because I'm conserving money due to an upcoming kitchen remodel. Only essential purchases for the next couple of months.

I finally ordered the two Sky CDs from AmazWAN, and I've listened to each of them a couple of times. I'm really glad I bought them, thanks to Linda & audio clips she posted above. They don't sound like The Knack, but there's enough similarities...and Doug Fieger's voice, of course...that make them nice additions to my collection.
Even though they're listed as CD-R's at Amazon, the packaging is very nice, including the CD label. My only complaint is that one of the tray card spines is stuck to the jewel case, like the ink was still wet when it was placed in the case. If I tried to remove it, the spine would tear, so it will need to stay in that case forever. Otherwise, very happy with these.
