Welcome to Spalding

Spalding is located on the River Welland, in the county of Lincolnshire, approximately 105 miles north of London and 15 miles south-west of Boston.

The town has a population of around 23,200 and is within the South Holland District which covers an area of approximately 280 square miles (737 sq kms).

Surrounded by flat fenlands, this once important trading centre is a peaceful market town characterized by grand Georgian terraces and buildings. It is renowned for the growing of tulip and daffodil bulbs, and each year the town attracts thousands of visitors for its Flower Parade. The many attractions around Spalding make it an ideal touring base.

Historically the town's economy has been based upon agriculture and food production and this continues to be the case with around 60% of the workforce employed in the creation, processing or distribution of food - much higher than the county average. The unemployment rate is one of the lowest in the country at 1.5%. Tourism is a developing sector with good potential.

According to the Dictionary of English Place Names (A.D.Mills) the name Spalding means 'settlement of the dwellers in Spald', with Spald being the name of an old district. The name appeared in the Domesday Book (1086) as Spallinge and in the early 12th-century as Spaldingis.
