I love Jack Lemmon and Barbara Harris but this film didn't stick with me.
Watched the Kino Lorber Blu-ray
went into the movie expecting to hate it. came out not knowing why it's so hated? perhaps it's the soft spot for quirky little 70s movies in my heart but i find this one a truly funny and endearing romp. plus, jack lemmon gets a "mouth-to-mouth resuscitation" from jason robards so i'm not gonna complain abt anything.
I can't believe I found a ‘70s movie with Jack Lemmon, Barbara Harris, and Jason Robards which I really didn't like. This is a male fantasy reaction to women's lib, albeit a decade too late to have anything to say about it. There's a lot of "chauvinism," as they would describe it in the script, which plays like "misogyny," as we would describe it today. Lemmon is a dyspeptic cartoonist based on James Thurber whose work mostly consists of tell-it-like-it-is tableaus of gender politics, but it creaks with outdated morality and humor. As much as the filmmakers think they're taking the piss out of Lemmon's crabby, cantankerous creep, they just appear to give him the benefit of the doubt --…
for thurber fans, the war between men and women has more easter eggs than endgame. it has nods towards the male animal, the secret life of walter mitty, and thurber's real life. jack lemmon plays the thurberian cartoonist, and just like jt, he likes to draw on walls, meets mean terriers, and his growing blindness embitters him and fills him with misdirected rage at everyone around him. jason robards shows up as a classic thurber alpha dude always on the verge of cucking thurber.
i went in thinking shavelson and arnold adapted a thurber story here, but it's like they wanted to bring the whole thurberverse to life. the animators do a surprisingly good job with thurber's drawings, and shavelson pulls off a brilliant set piece mixing live action and animation for the last flower sequence. i wish it were better overall.
Growing up in the 70s must have been WILD. Especially if your parents were Jason Robards, Barbara Harris, and stepdad Jack Lemmon.
This particular genre of movies really appeals to me (= 60s/early 70s sex comedy but add a few children so that it's a family movie)
Jack Lemmon as a cartoonist, devoted to bachelorhood, whose life is turned upside down when he gets married. Sound familiar? Sadly this 'aint no How To Murder Your Wife.
Peter Wilson is said cartoonist, extremely myopic, and with a hatred of women, children and dogs, who somehow becomes entangled with Terri (Barbara Harris), divorced, with 3 kids, and dog, and ends up marrying her.
If it had been made 10 years earlier the story would have been played much more for laughs, but into the 70s it's about male angst, with unexpected flights of fancy wherein Peter's creations come to life, and he struggles with suddenly being a father figure to kids who don't think of him as a father,…
I'm the first one to admit that I probably don't watch enough of the great films from yesteryear. Even with my favorite genres I still don't take the time to dip into the movies that made a different generation smile, laugh and maybe scream...just a little. When I start feeling this way, I always grab something that's older and handily available. This time it being The War Between Men and Women.
Basically this movie is about a complete prick of a human being, portrayed by Jack Lemmon and how he basically wants to make a single moms life hell because he is...well, an Asshole. Some good stuff out of the way first. When not dealing with relationship stuff, Jacks character…
The War Between Men and Women (1972)
dir: Melville Shavelson
3.0
Angry and sappy and long. A misogynist cartoonist falls for a mother of three and learns to accept that women aren’t all bad. Really cool animation invading real life moments but overall not my favorite. Presented as part of The Vista’s IB Technicolor fest.
info…
Peter Wilson is a cartoonist who doesn't want to admit he is going blind. In the lobby of an optician's, after his eyes have been dilated and he is wearing dark glasses, he trips over Terry. Romance gradually develops.

Second and last movie in the “Jack Lemmon plays a sexist cartoonist” movie timeline, not AS bad, just at dated though. The movie doesn’t really know what it wants to be, one moment its very sweet, then of its very sad, then of its very funny, and then of its very insulting !! Despite its obvious and clear flaws I enjoyed every second of it. ESPECIALLY loved the animated sequences.
He's a grumpy chauvinist, she's way too good for him but loves him for...reasons? I guess??? It's a romantic comedy, you know where it's going. The actors are fine, there are animated sequences that don't really add anything, and the observational humor isn't all that observant or humorous - it's pretty dull overall.
Barbara Harris and Lisa Gerritsen were the standouts.
