Mark Haley was the scientist in the Challengers of the Unknown and the team’s inventor. He correctly guesses that it is the radiation from a meteorite that mutates a spider and has a tool that tracks energy signatures. Since he is called professor, he supposedly has a P.H.D, supposedly in marine biology since he is described as a scuba expert.
